PART 5

Jameson did not ask Ruby to leave.

He ordered it.

That was his mistake.

He stood in the living room with Brooke behind him and Eliana seated like a queen on the couch.

Emma’s toys lay across the rug.

A little wooden train.

A pink bunny.

A stuffed elephant Ruby’s mother had sent before she died.

Jameson folded his arms.

“I think it’s best if you and Emma stay somewhere else for a while.”

Ruby looked at him.

“Somewhere else?”

“You need space.”

“No.”

“You need my space.”

His face hardened.

“Don’t make this ugly.”

Eliana clicked her tongue.

“Ruby, dignity matters.”

Ruby turned to her.

“Then why is his mistress wearing my robe?”

Brooke flushed.

Jameson stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Emma appeared at the hallway entrance, rubbing her eyes.

“Mommy?”

Ruby’s entire body changed.

Whatever grief she had felt became protection.

She walked to Emma and lifted her into her arms.

Jameson pointed toward the staircase.

“Pack what you need.”

Ruby looked at him over Emma’s head.

“You are telling your wife and daughter to leave?”

“For now.”

“While Brooke stays?”

Brooke looked down.

Eliana answered for her.

“Brooke is not hysterical.”

Ruby almost laughed.

Hysterical.

The word people used when a woman refused to make betrayal convenient.

Ruby carried Emma upstairs.

She packed slowly.

Not because she had nowhere to go.

Because every item needed to be documented.

Clothes.

Birth certificate copies.

Medical records.

Emma’s favorite toys.

Ruby’s laptop.

The original robe remained on Brooke.

That robe became evidence too.

By the time Ruby rolled the suitcase downstairs, Jameson had called someone.

Not the police.

A locksmith.

Ruby heard him say, “My wife is leaving, and I need the locks changed today.”

She smiled for the first time that afternoon.

Then she called Denise.

One sentence.

“Activate everything.”

Denise did not ask if Ruby was sure.

She said, “Stay visible.”

“Keep Emma with you.”

“Police are already on their way.”

Jameson saw her phone and grabbed for it.

Ruby stepped back.

May you like

“No more touching what belongs to me.”
