Chapter 15 - THE SECOND CHRISTMAS GIFTThe ambulance vanished into the snow before police closed the underground gate.

Its license plate belonged to a Bellrose emergency vehicle reported destroyed years earlier. Traffic cameras lost it near a service road leading into the mountains.

Richard replayed the driver’s face.

“That was Evelyn.”

Daniel refused to accept it.

“You identified her body.”

“The coffin was closed after the hospital transferred her.”

“Naomi signed the release.”

Everyone turned toward the attorney’s video feed.

Naomi’s expression had changed.

She had known Evelyn’s death records contained irregularities.

Evelyn collapsed inside Naomi’s office after drinking tea. Naomi called a private Bellrose medical team rather than emergency services.

The team declared her dead.

Naomi never saw an independent physician confirm it.

“You allowed Bellrose to remove her body?” Hannah asked.

“I believed Arthur intended to steal evidence from the hospital.”

“So you signed papers you did not verify.”

“Yes.”

The pattern reached everyone eventually.

Convenience.

Fear.

Secrecy.

Then consequences carried by someone else.

Evelyn’s casket was exhumed under emergency authority.

The body inside belonged to a woman of similar age and build.

DNA results would take time, but dental records did not match.

Evelyn had either escaped Bellrose or helped arrange the substitution.

Richard opened the final folder on her memory drive.

A recording appeared.

Evelyn sat inside the basement of Hannah’s house several weeks before her reported death.

“If you are watching this, Arthur survived longer than I expected.”

She explained that she discovered her brother-in-law’s identity five years earlier. Rather than expose him immediately, she worked with him to complete a safe reversal treatment for the children Bellrose had injured.

She believed she could control his access.

She was wrong.

Arthur wanted Rose-3.

Naomi wanted the trust.

Richard wanted the company protected.

Evelyn wanted to repair the damage without admitting her own role in funding the research.

Each adult believed secrecy remained necessary for one more month, one more experiment, or one more legal maneuver.

“Emma must never become the final subject,” Evelyn said.

Hannah leaned toward the screen.

“Then why was she driving the ambulance?”

The recording continued as though Evelyn had anticipated the question.

“Arthur has prepared a woman to resemble me. Her name is Clara Moore.”

Leah stopped breathing.

“My sister.”

Leah’s mother had delivered two daughters.

Leah was the older child.

Clara was an infant when their mother died.

Bellrose guardians separated them. Arthur raised Clara inside private clinics and trained her to use Evelyn’s identity as an emergency trustee substitute.

The ambulance driver was not Evelyn.

She was Leah’s younger sister, shaped for decades to resemble the woman whose legal authority could move Bellrose assets.

Leah stared at the frozen image.

“I thought she died with my mother.”

Naomi whispered:

“Arthur has used Clara’s biometric profile for years.”

Evelyn’s pendant, signature, voice, and trust credentials could all be reproduced through her.

Richard looked shattered.

“How much of my wife’s final year belonged to Clara?”

No one knew.

Hospital security alerted Hannah to a new delivery.

A courier had left another silver gift box outside Emma’s protected room.

No person appeared on the corridor cameras.

The box was identical to the one beneath the Christmas tree.

Red ribbon.

Pink cream jar.

A card bearing Emma’s name.

Police placed it inside a containment case.

The ribbon chip activated remotely.

Evelyn’s voice spoke:

“Emma, the first jar tested whether you could heal.”

Hannah grabbed the containment case.

A second voice replaced Evelyn’s.

Clara.

“The next one tests whether your mother can.”

Inside the box, the pink cream began bubbling.

Dr. Lane looked toward Hannah’s hands.

A tiny red patch had appeared where she touched the outer silver lid.

The chemical had not been sealed inside the jar.

It covered the entire package.

Daniel pulled her toward the emergency sink.

Police sirens sounded below as the hospital elevators stopped simultaneously.

Emma’s security camera turned toward the doorway.

Arthur appeared on its live feed from an unknown location.

Beside him stood Clara wearing Evelyn’s face.

Between them sat a second child with both cheeks covered in old burn scars.

Ava stared at the screen.

“That girl was in my clinic.”

“Who is she?” Hannah demanded.

Arthur lifted Emma’s stolen blood tube.

“The child Bellrose created before Emma.”

The unidentified girl opened her eyes.

She looked enough like Hannah to silence the room.

Then she whispered:

“Mom, they told me you chose the daughter who healed faster.”

The hospital lights went out before Hannah could answer.
