Chapter 7 - LEAH MOORELeah entered Emma’s hospital room only after Hannah agreed and police searched her belongings.
She was thirty-five, with pale scars along her jaw and beneath both ears. Her voice remained soft, but nothing about her seemed fragile.
She stopped several feet from Emma’s bed.
“I’m sorry this happened to you.”
Emma studied the faint lines on Leah’s cheeks.
“Did your cream burn too?”
“Yes.”
“Did it hurt forever?”
Leah did not lie.
“It hurt for a long time. Then it hurt less.”
Emma reached for Hannah’s hand.
Leah had lived under the name Laura Bennett since she was twelve. After her mother died, a Bellrose-funded guardian moved her through several foster homes.
Naomi visited her twice.
The first time, she offered medical treatment.
The second, she offered money in exchange for a statement claiming Leah’s mother contaminated the cream herself.
Leah refused.
At seventeen, the residential home where she lived caught fire.
Bellrose records reported her death.
She escaped through a laundry window and disappeared deliberately.
“Why return now?” Daniel asked.
“Evelyn found me.”
They met secretly for nearly a year. Evelyn collected testimony connecting Naomi to the original contamination, Ava’s case, and several other children injured inside Bellrose clinics.
“Where is that evidence?” Hannah asked.
“Inside the silver box.”
The box appeared empty after investigators removed the jar and ribbon.
Leah pressed her thumb against a decorative indentation beneath the lid.
A false base opened.
The compartment had been emptied.
Evelyn intended it to contain a memory drive holding every recorded interview.
Someone removed it before Emma opened the gift.
Cole may have entered the basement to find Evelyn’s recorder.
The woman in Hannah’s coat may have taken the drive from the box.
“What was on it?” Ortiz asked.
“Enough to stop the sale and expose Naomi.”
Leah looked toward Richard.
“And enough to convict him.”
Richard did not defend himself.
Leah’s gaze shifted to Hannah.
“You need to know why Evelyn chose your daughter.”
Hannah stiffened.
“Emma is the beneficiary.”
“That isn’t the only reason.”
Leah opened an old medical file.
The first page showed the four children enrolled in the original Bellrose trial.
Leah.
Two brothers from Tacoma.
And a four-year-old girl listed only as H-4.
The photograph beside H-4 showed a child with Hannah’s eyes.
Hannah stared.
“I was never part of a cream trial.”
“You were.”
She had been placed in the program after developing severe eczema. Her mother withdrew her before the contaminated jars were distributed.
Naomi kept Hannah’s medical profile because her skin did not react to a mild caustic test used during the first phase.
Years later, Bellrose researchers discovered Hannah carried a genetic trait associated with rapid skin repair.
Emma inherited it.
Naomi had followed Hannah’s medical records from childhood.
Daniel’s meeting with her in college had not been accidental. Bellrose sponsored the scholarship program where they met.
Richard knew Hannah’s name from the old trial but claimed he did not recognize her until after the wedding.
“Your family selected me,” Hannah said.
Richard’s silence confirmed it.
Bellrose expected Emma’s inherited trait to support a new scar-treatment patent. Evelyn learned about the plan and placed the company shares in Emma’s name to prevent Naomi from using her without parental consent.
The trust was not only an inheritance.
It was a legal shield around Emma’s body.
Leah produced a photograph taken three weeks earlier.
Naomi stood beside a private laboratory table.
On the table were blood samples labeled with Emma’s name.
Hannah had never authorized them.
Emma’s pediatric clinic was owned by a Bellrose subsidiary.
Naomi already possessed her genetic material.
