Chapter 9 - THE SECOND REACTIONDr. Lane ordered emergency medication while the hospital sealed Emma’s room.

The delayed compound activated beneath the skin, creating a second wave of inflammation. Because the chemical capsules had been engineered to dissolve gradually, ordinary washing could not remove all of them.

Leah stood behind the glass, visibly shaken.

“That didn’t happen to me.”

“This formula is newer,” Dr. Lane said. “Someone improved it.”

Daniel struck the corridor wall.

“Improved?”

“For controlled release.”

The words sounded obscene beside a nine-year-old child crying beneath cooling dressings.

Emma’s rapid-healing trait helped limit deeper damage, but the attack could still leave scars.

Dr. Lane refused to predict the outcome.

Hannah stayed beside the bed.

“You don’t have to be brave.”

Emma’s voice trembled.

“Grandpa said I was dramatic.”

“Grandpa was wrong.”

“Did he want this?”

Hannah looked toward the security camera.

“He made choices that allowed it to happen.”

Emma understood the distinction better than many adults would have.

“That means part of him did.”

Richard heard the child’s words through the supervised hospital feed.

He asked police to disconnect it.

They refused.

The laboratory team identified the delayed compound as a prototype coded Rose-2.

Only three people held authorization.

Dr. Simon Vale.

Naomi Price.

And Evelyn Blake.

Evelyn’s access remained active after her death.

Someone had used it on Christmas morning.

Naomi argued that Simon must have stolen the credential.

Simon sent police a video before disappearing.

He stood inside an unknown laboratory wearing a surgical mask around his neck.

“I did not formulate Rose-2 for Emma. Naomi ordered it for controlled scar induction using samples she said came from consenting adult volunteers.”

He displayed signed authorization forms bearing Evelyn’s name.

The date came three weeks after Evelyn died.

Simon claimed he realized the truth only when the Christmas camera activated.

“Why run?” Ortiz asked through the secure connection.

“Because Naomi will kill me before the board meeting.”

“Where are you?”

“I need protection first.”

“You watched Emma’s reaction live.”

“I tried to disable the feed.”

“You continued collecting data.”

Simon lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Another adult remained close enough to know the truth and still allowed the experiment to continue because evidence might protect him.

Simon offered the Rose-2 reversal formula in exchange for immunity.

Dr. Lane demanded the medical information immediately.

Simon refused until prosecutors joined the call.

Hannah moved in front of the camera.

“My daughter is lying in that room because you accepted Naomi’s explanation.”

“I did not know it was a child.”

“You knew after the first video frame.”

Simon looked away.

“And you still waited.”

He finally sent the reversal protocol without receiving immunity.

The treatment reduced Emma’s swelling.

No one thanked him.

The location metadata exposed Simon’s hiding place inside a Bellrose warehouse near the waterfront.

Police entered.

Simon was gone.

On the laboratory table sat Evelyn’s missing memory drive.

The drive had been opened and copied.

Beside it lay Hannah’s red coat.

Madeline’s fingerprints covered the sleeves.

Ava’s DNA appeared inside the collar.

And on the memory drive was a fresh fingerprint belonging to Naomi.

All three women had touched evidence connected to the Christmas attack.

The final folder contained a video recorded by Evelyn.

“Naomi will attempt to disqualify every blood heir. Madeline will be blamed first. Richard will be blamed second. Hannah will be blamed last.”

Evelyn leaned closer to the camera.

“If Emma is harmed, look at Daniel.”

Hannah stared at her husband.

👉 Evelyn’s final warning unexpectedly placed Daniel at the center of the plan against his own daughter.
