Charles stared at the table.
“You already know.”
“Harper?”
“No.”
The first experiment occurred thirty years earlier.
The subject was a seven-year-old girl named Hannah Whitmore.
Nolan had never heard the name.
Charles revealed that Hannah was Teresa’s younger sister.
At her seventh birthday party, Hannah collapsed after drinking fruit punch. Doctors diagnosed a seizure disorder. Teresa’s parents became convinced Hannah required permanent institutional care.
Teresa was fifteen.
After Hannah entered Meadowridge, the family inheritance shifted toward Teresa.
Hannah remained institutionalized for twelve years and died under another name.
Charles claimed he learned the truth only after marrying Teresa.
“Why remain with her?” Lauren asked.
“She said she was a child when it happened.”
“Was she?”
“She poured the drink.”
The founder of Meadowridge, Dr. Samuel Warren, instructed Teresa to add a compound that would produce a temporary episode. He promised Hannah would recover within hours.
Instead, Hannah was declared unstable and removed.
Teresa’s parents signed documents while terrified.
The method became known as a birthday transition: create a medical crisis at the exact moment a trust, guardianship, or estate condition changed.
Dr. Ellis Warren was Samuel’s son.
He inherited both the clinic and the family strategy.
Charles discovered Teresa had used similar methods as an adult but persuaded himself that exposure would destroy Nolan and Sabrina.
“So you helped her?” Lauren asked.
“I tried to limit the harm.”
He carried emergency equipment to parties.
He reduced doses when possible.
He altered paperwork so victims would eventually regain access.
The detective’s expression hardened.
“You stood beside poison and called yourself protection.”
Charles lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Nolan listened through the observation window.
His father had attended every family celebration with an emergency bag. Nolan thought the behavior came from anxiety after Robert’s death.
It came from experience.
Charles expected someone to collapse.
The burned paper listed six earlier birthday transitions.
One involved a child with Camille’s surname.
Mercer, C.—age seven.
Camille was seven when she suffered a mysterious fainting episode at a school birthday celebration.
She remembered waking in a clinic with her mother beside her.
Evelyn later withdrew her from school for months and refused to explain why.
Meadowridge records described Camille as emotionally unstable after the episode.
The same case number appeared in Harper’s transfer file.
The program had targeted both mother and daughter at the same age.
Dr. Patel examined Camille’s childhood medical history.
The episode was blamed on dehydration, but the symptoms resembled Harper’s current condition.
Someone had tested the birthday method on Camille before deciding she could become useful as Robert’s future heir.
Camille’s father, Michael Mercer, entered Meadowridge after her collapse and signed several agreements. He may have cooperated to keep Camille out of long-term care.
Now he had taken Robert’s blood card back to the same facility.
Detective Hayes traced Michael’s vehicle to a Meadowridge annex near the state line.
Police entered the property and found him unconscious beside a destroyed laboratory freezer.
The medical cooler was empty.
A note lay near his hand.
The blood card was never Robert’s. Evelyn switched it. Ask Camille what she remembers about the second girl at her seventh birthday.
Camille closed her eyes.
She remembered balloons.

For years, Camille believed the girl was her reflection in a mirrored wall.

They had identical crescent-shaped birthmarks near the wrist.
The girl whispered:
“If one of us falls, the other must stay awake.”
Camille looked down at her own wrist.
A faint mark curved beneath the skin.
Her daughter had the same mark.

Camille’s birth record contained an unexplained second newborn identification number.
She may have been born a twin.
The unknown girl at the party had not been imaginary.
