Chapter 6 - The Girl in the Pink DressMichael Mercer regained consciousness under police supervision.

He had been struck from behind inside the Meadowridge annex. He remembered carrying Robert’s blood card into the laboratory, then hearing a woman’s voice say:
“You were supposed to protect only one daughter.”
Camille sat beside his hospital bed.
“One daughter?”
Michael began crying.
He had known about the twin.
Camille and another girl were born to Evelyn after an emergency delivery. The second infant was named Celine.
Evelyn believed Celine died within hours.
Michael learned later that Meadowridge had transferred her into a private family-placement program.
“Why didn’t you tell Mom?”
“I tried. Dr. Warren showed me records saying Evelyn had approved it.”
“Did you believe them?”
“No.”
“Then why did you stay silent?”
“Because he threatened to take you too.”
When Camille was seven, Teresa arranged the birthday experiment to test whether the sisters shared the same unusual response to the sedative.
Celine had been brought secretly to the party.
Both girls drank from identical cups.
Celine collapsed first.
Camille remained awake long enough to watch Meadowridge staff carry her twin away.
The clinic later used medication and repeated questioning to convince Camille the other girl had been a dream.
Evelyn discovered enough evidence to begin investigating Robert’s estate and the birthday program.
Her car crash occurred months later.
Michael believed Teresa ordered it.
He could not prove it.
“What happened to Celine?” Camille asked.
Michael looked toward Daniel.
“Your mother’s final letter said she found her.”
Daniel opened the third sealed envelope.
It contained no letter.
Only a photograph.
An adult woman stood outside a rural elementary school holding a little girl’s hand. The woman looked almost exactly like Camille.
The photograph was taken two years earlier.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
Celine survived. She is using the name Sabrina Cole.
Camille stared at the words.
Sabrina.
The woman who carried Harper’s cup into the laundry room.
The sister Camille believed she had met through Nolan’s family was actually her own missing twin.
Nolan entered the room as Camille read the note.
“Sabrina is my sister’s wife’s cousin,” he said slowly. “At least, that’s what my mother told everyone.”
Teresa introduced Sabrina to the family eight years earlier. She claimed Sabrina was the daughter of a distant relative who needed help finding work.
Sabrina and Camille looked similar, but different hair, makeup, weight, and style made the resemblance easy to dismiss.
Teresa frequently joked that Nolan had “married the prettier version.”
The cruelty had served another purpose.
It prevented anyone from studying their faces too closely without appearing rude.
Camille requested immediate DNA testing.
Sabrina refused at first.
Then Harper woke and asked why Aunt Sabrina made her drink something bad.
Sabrina agreed.
The result showed an identical-twin relationship.
Camille entered Sabrina’s guarded hospital room.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Sabrina looked away first.
“Did you know?”
“Not when we met.”
“When did you learn?”
“Three years ago.”
Teresa showed Sabrina the Meadowridge records and claimed Evelyn had chosen Camille while abandoning Celine.
“She said you got the real family, the education, and the inheritance.”
“I didn’t know you existed.”
“She said you did.”
Sabrina had spent three years believing Camille recognized her and pretended otherwise.
Every invitation to Harper’s birthdays felt like humiliation.
Every family photograph looked like proof that Camille had stolen the life they should have shared.
Teresa fed the resentment carefully.
“Why did you put it in Harper’s cup?” Camille asked.
Sabrina’s eyes filled with tears.
“Teresa said the drink would make her sleepy for ten minutes. She said you would lose control, the trust would freeze, and then we could force you to acknowledge me.”
“You used my child to demand a place in my life.”
“Yes.”
“Did you smile when she fell?”
Sabrina covered her face.
“I thought Teresa’s plan was working. Then Harper didn’t get back up.”
Camille felt anger stronger than grief.
“You are my sister. That does not make what you did smaller.”
“I know.”
Sabrina revealed that Teresa promised to transfer half of Robert’s estate to her after Camille was declared unstable.
The promise was false.
The trust documents named only Camille and Harper.
Teresa intended Sabrina to become the visible criminal while she regained control through guardianship.
Nolan asked where the blue bottle came from.
Sabrina pointed toward Charles’s emergency bag.
“Teresa took it from him.”
Charles insisted the bottle was not his.
His bag contained rescue medication, not sedatives.
Someone had replaced the bottle before he arrived.
The pantry camera footage advanced another thirty seconds.
After Teresa handed Sabrina the bottle, a third woman entered the laundry room.
She looked identical to Camille and Sabrina.
She removed a second vial from the emergency bag and slipped it into her pocket.
Sabrina stared at the screen.
“That’s not me.”
Camille felt the room tilt.
Their mother had delivered twins.
Unless the record was incomplete.
Michael looked at the paused image.
