Chapter 1 - The Fall No One Tried to StopOlivia knew Tyler was behind her before his hand touched her shoulder.

She heard his breath, smelled the sharp cedar cologne Robert had given him for Christmas, and felt the wooden railing press against her hip as she turned.
Tyler’s face was twisted with anger.
“You should’ve kept your mouth shut.”
Then he shoved her.
Olivia struck the first step sideways. Her shoulder slammed into the railing, her lower back hit the edge of another stair, and the world became a violent blur of polished wood and frozen faces.
She landed on the floor near the dining table.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Robert remained beside the fireplace with a glass in his hand. Jennifer sat at the dining table, her napkin still folded across her lap. Caroline stood near the kitchen doorway, one hand pressed over her mouth.
Tyler looked down from the upper landing.
“She does this for sympathy.”
Olivia tried to push herself upright.
Pain exploded through her lower back.
She screamed and collapsed again.
Robert walked closer but did not kneel.
“Walk it off. You’re fine.”
“I can’t.”
“You always can when there’s an audience.”
Jennifer folded her arms.
“She’ll do anything to ruin a peaceful weekend.”
Olivia’s fingers clawed weakly at the wooden floor. She tried to bend her knees.
Nothing happened.
She looked at her legs as if they belonged to someone else.
“I can’t feel my legs.”
The smugness vanished from Tyler’s face.
Robert glanced toward the windows, calculating how visible the house was from the road.
Jennifer reached for Olivia’s phone on the dining table.
“No hospitals,” she said. “Not until we agree on what happened.”
But Caroline had already stepped into the pantry.
With trembling hands, she dialed 911 and whispered the lake-house address.
Paramedics arrived eight minutes later.
Natalie Brooks, the lead paramedic, knelt beside Olivia and ordered everyone away. She stabilized the teenager’s neck and spine while another medic prepared the stretcher.
When Natalie lifted the back of Olivia’s shirt to check for swelling, she stopped.
Faded bruises crossed Olivia’s ribs and spine. Some were yellowing. Others were older shadows beneath her fair skin.
Natalie looked toward the police officer entering behind her.
That single glance changed the entire room.
Tyler backed toward the staircase.
Robert attempted to take control.
“My daughter has a history of exaggerating injuries.”
Natalie did not look at him.
“She has a history of injuries.”
At the hospital, Dr. Priya Patel ordered emergency scans.
Olivia lay inside the trauma room wearing a rigid neck brace while Robert and Jennifer demanded access from behind the glass.
Tyler stood between them, staring at the floor.
Dr. Patel returned holding an MRI tablet.
She pointed to a fresh area of inflammation near Olivia’s lower spine.
Then she enlarged a thin white line crossing an older vertebra.
“This fracture didn’t happen today.”
Olivia’s mouth went dry.
Robert’s face collapsed beyond the glass.
Tyler turned toward him.
Dr. Patel opened a second image.
Another healed injury appeared higher along Olivia’s spine.
It was older than the first.

And it had never been treated.
