“The girl’s scans are worse than predicted.”
Robert’s voice answered.
“Can Patel prove the older injuries?”
“Yes.”
“Then remove Caroline’s copies and prepare Emma.”
Emma pressed one hand over her mouth.
“Prepare her for what?” Robert asked.
“A relapse. She has a documented history.”
Emma’s history had been manufactured by Harrow.
Medication reactions became psychiatric episodes.
Resistance became delusion.
Witness statements became obsession.
If Harrow drugged her again, Robert could discredit her before she reached court.
Emma stepped away from the wall.
Harrow turned.
For one second, neither moved.
“You should not be here,” he said.
“This is where you sent me.”

Emma raised Caroline’s heavy lamp with both hands.
“Don’t.”
Harrow smiled faintly.
“You were always easier when frightened.”
“I’m still frightened.”
“Then put that down.”
“No.”
Police entered through the rear door seconds later.
Harrow fled through a bedroom window before officers reached the hall. He left the medical bag behind.
Inside were sedatives, forged psychiatric forms, a syringe containing Emma’s DNA, and a thumb drive labeled Mercer final review.
No arrest occurred.

Arthur turned toward Jennifer.

The records did not prove who administered it.
But Jennifer had collected his prescriptions that week.
Olivia watched the footage without speaking.

Caroline entered the room.
“I knew Jennifer hated the trust.”
“You still brought me to Mountain Crest.”
“I thought she was overwhelmed.”
“You always thought the adult deserved one more explanation.”
Caroline began to answer.
Olivia stopped her.
“I’m not asking why anymore.”
The sentence changed something between them.
