Chapter 1 - ONE MINUTE BEFORE TWOThe crystal chandelier trembled when Clara struck the gift table.

Boxes toppled around her. Silver balloons snapped loose from their ribbons and drifted toward the ballroom ceiling. A tower of pale-blue cupcakes collapsed across the polished marble floor.

Clara curled both arms around her eight-month-pregnant belly.

Pain spread through her side, but fear struck harder.

Julian stood above her, slowly straightening the cuffs of his expensive suit as though he had merely corrected an employee.

“You embarrassed me.”

No one moved.

Nearly eighty guests had attended the baby shower inside the Blackwell mansion. Corporate executives, attorneys, charity directors, and political donors now stood frozen beneath white floral arches, staring at the pregnant woman on the floor.

Clara tasted blood at the corner of her mouth.

Chloe Mercer stepped beside Julian.

At twenty-two, she was young enough to be mistaken for an intern and polished enough to understand exactly how much attention her entrance had caused. She placed one hand against her flat stomach and smiled down at Clara.

“I’m the one carrying his real future.”

The lie had been prepared carefully.

Chloe had never shown a medical report publicly. She wore loose dresses, avoided alcohol when cameras were present, and allowed gossip to grow around an alleged pregnancy.

Beatrice Blackwell lifted her champagne glass.

She began applauding.

The sharp claps echoed through the ballroom.

Arthur joined her.

Several guests lowered their eyes. Others reached for phones but hesitated when Blackwell security officers moved closer.

Julian wrapped one arm around Chloe and pointed at Clara.

“She will give this family the heir you never could.”

Clara’s baby moved beneath her hands.

She breathed again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Still there.

Her cracked wristwatch lay among the fallen gifts. The glass face had broken when she hit the table, but the hands continued moving.

One minute before two.

Julian noticed her looking at it.

“You’re worried about the time?”

Clara reached for the watch.

Pain crossed her face, then disappeared beneath something colder.

“You should have been more careful about the woman you married.”

Julian’s smile weakened.

The watch had belonged to Clara’s father, Nathan Arden, the co-founder of Blackwell Meridian Group. Arthur Blackwell had worn the public title of founder for twenty-three years, but Nathan supplied the original patents, investors, and federal transportation contracts that built the empire.

After Nathan’s death, the watch passed to Clara.

Julian believed it was sentimental.

It was also a secure recorder, encrypted transmitter, and authentication key.

For fourteen months, Clara had used it to send evidence to federal investigators.

Every shell company.

Every bribed inspector.

Every falsified contract.

Every offshore account Arthur believed no outsider could trace.

The watch had transmitted Julian’s punch before Clara even touched the floor.

The ballroom clock reached two.

The mansion’s entrance doors burst open.

Federal agents flooded the room carrying badges, warrants, and evidence folders. A second team moved toward Arthur’s private office while technical agents began seizing phones and computers.

Beatrice’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered beside her shoes.

Arthur gripped the back of a chair.

“What is this?”

Special Agent Maya Torres entered last.

She found Clara among the ruined gifts and immediately signaled for emergency medical assistance.

Julian looked from Maya’s badge to Clara’s broken watch.

His face emptied.

“You arranged this?”

Clara held her belly and smiled through tears.

“No, Julian.”

Maya stopped beside him.

“She documented it.”

Agents ordered everyone to remain where they were.

Chloe pulled away from Julian so quickly that his arm fell through empty space.

Arthur shouted that the agents were trespassing.

Maya handed him the warrant.

“Blackwell Meridian Group is under investigation for wire fraud, bribery, money laundering, obstruction, and theft of federal infrastructure funds.”

“That company employs twenty thousand people!”

“Then you should have been more careful with it.”

Paramedics entered with a stretcher.

As they lifted Clara from the floor, Maya leaned close.

“The evidence transfer completed at exactly two.”

Clara looked toward Arthur’s office.

“Did you find the blue ledger?”

“Not yet.”

That answer frightened her more than the raid relieved her.

The blue ledger contained the original ownership records proving Arthur had built Blackwell Meridian with stolen Arden assets. It also named every official who helped him hide the theft.

Only six people knew it existed.

Clara.

Maya.

Nathan’s former attorney.

Arthur.

Beatrice.

And Julian.

As the stretcher passed him, Julian whispered:

“You think you won because agents entered one house?”

Clara met his eyes.

“No. I know you lost because you hit me before learning what time it was.”

Then an agent emerged from Arthur’s office carrying an empty blue leather case.

The ledger had already been removed.

Someone had known the raid was coming.

👉 The FBI stormed the mansion exactly as Clara planned, but the missing blue ledger proved someone inside the investigation had warned the Blackwells.
