Chapter 10 - ARTHUR’S VERSION OF THE TRUTHArthur requested to see Clara.
She refused an in-person meeting.
He appeared through a secure screen from the mansion library, guarded by agents. Without control of his phone, staff, and attorneys, he seemed smaller.
Not weak.
Merely contained.
“You saw the video,” he said.
“Yes.”
“Then you know your father worked with us.”
“I know he sat inside your office.”
“Nathan designed the original identity system.”
Clara waited.
Arthur explained that Blue Cradle did not begin as a criminal program. Nathan created an encrypted platform to protect children entering witness relocation after their parents exposed organized crime.
Birth records were sealed.
New identities created.
Medical histories transferred securely.
The system saved lives.
Arthur saw its financial potential.
A protected identity could become a phantom beneficiary. A hidden child could inherit property without public scrutiny. A declared-dead adult could continue controlling accounts.
Nathan tried to shut the system down after discovering its misuse.
Arthur argued that the profits kept Blackwell Meridian alive.
Their partnership collapsed.
“Why was he in your office after the accident?” Clara asked.
“Because he returned voluntarily.”
“Why?”
“To prevent you from becoming a target.”
Nathan agreed to remain legally dead if Arthur kept Clara outside Blue Cradle. In exchange, Nathan helped identify corrupted accounts and relocate stolen children.
It became an uneasy secret partnership.
Then Clara married Julian.
Arthur claimed Nathan approved the marriage because he believed Julian could eventually help dismantle the family from within.
Clara stared at the screen.
“Julian hit me in front of eighty people.”
“Nathan misjudged him.”
“So did I.”
Arthur leaned closer.
“Your father is not the hero you need him to be.”
“Neither are you.”
“No. But I am here answering.”
“You are answering because your accounts are frozen.”
Arthur smiled faintly.
She had inherited Nathan’s refusal to accept packaged truths.
He admitted scheduling the fake pregnancy, replacement infant, and medical incapacity operation. His goal was to prevent Clara’s daughter from receiving the founder vote.
He denied ordering violence.
“Julian acted like a frightened man.”
“He acted like your son.”
Arthur’s expression cooled.
Clara asked about Margaret.
“She has the ledger,” he said.
“Where is she going?”
“To Nathan.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
The word landed without hesitation.
Arthur claimed Nathan operated from an offshore medical vessel outside normal jurisdiction. Margaret had supplied him with evidence for years.
“Why would she bring him the ledger?”
“Because the ledger proves I did not create the largest Blue Cradle accounts.”
“Who did?”
“Nathan.”
Clara refused to believe or dismiss it without evidence.
Arthur offered coordinates for the vessel in exchange for limited access to his legal team.
Maya rejected the bargain but recorded the information.
A Coast Guard unit searched the coordinates.
No vessel appeared.
Satellite records showed one had departed twelve hours earlier.
Its registered owner was the Arden Humanitarian Foundation, dissolved after Nathan’s death.
Inside Arthur’s recovered files, analysts found a private call made shortly before the shower.
Nathan’s voice spoke with Julian.
“Bring Chloe into the ballroom. Clara must remain near the gift table until two.”
Julian answered:
“What if she refuses?”
“Make certain she doesn’t leave.”
Clara felt the room narrow.
Her father’s voice had helped place her where the attack happened.
The audio could be synthetic.
It could also be real.
Arthur watched her reaction.
“Nathan needed the raid to occur while every device remained inside the mansion.”
“He used me as bait.”
“We all did.”
Arthur said it without shame.
Clara ended the call.
She turned to Maya.
“Find the original audio source.”
“We will.”
“And no one uses my child as a reason to protect me from the truth.”
Maya nodded.
The technical report arrived hours later.
The voice was authentic.
No synthetic markers.
Nathan Arden had spoken to Julian before the baby shower.
Yet the call’s final twelve seconds had been deleted.
Analysts restored one sentence.
Nathan told Julian:
“If you touch my daughter, the trust will erase you.”
Julian knew the exact consequence before he attacked Clara.
