PART 1

“Her husband slapped her for refusing to sign the house papers… then her brother walked in with the real deed.”

The slap landed so loudly that the crystal glasses inside the cabinet trembled.

Madeline Hart turned her face to the side, one hand rising slowly to her cheek.

The skin burned beneath her fingers.

Across the polished wooden table, the house transfer papers lay open with a gold pen placed beside the signature line.

Her husband, Everett Cole, stood over her with his jaw tight and his hand still half-raised.

“Sign it, or you’ll regret coming home.”

Madeline stared at him through tears.

The living room of the mansion was flooded with afternoon light.

Tall windows.

Marble floors.

Fresh flowers.

A birthday ribbon still tied around a wrapped gift near the entrance.

Everything looked elegant enough to hide violence.

That was what this house had always done best.

Everett pointed at the papers.

“My mother is tired of this.”

“My family needs security.”

“You are my wife.”

“This house should be in our name.”

Madeline swallowed the blood at the corner of her lip.

“This house was never yours.”

Everett laughed once.

Cold.

Cruel.

“You really think that matters?”

“It matters to the deed.”

His expression darkened.

“You think your dead father can protect you forever?”

The front door opened before Madeline could answer.

Her brother, Nathan Bell, stepped in holding a wrapped birthday gift box.

He had been smiling.

Then he saw Madeline’s red cheek.

The papers.

Everett’s raised hand.

The smile disappeared so completely it looked erased.

The gift box slipped from his hand and hit the floor.

“Nathan,” Madeline whispered.

Everett turned.

“Stay out of this.”

Nathan walked forward slowly.

His voice was low and dangerous.

“Take your hand off my sister.”

Behind him, a woman in a black suit entered with a legal folder pressed to her chest.

Everett froze.

Madeline recognized her immediately.

Grace Holloway.

Her father’s estate lawyer.

Grace opened the folder.

“The deed is in her name only.”

Everett’s face drained.

Madeline pressed her palm harder to her cheek.

For three years, he had called the mansion his future.

For three years, his family had treated her like a guest inside her own inheritance.

Now the real deed had walked through the front door.
