PART 6

Everett tried to recover with charm.

Men like him always do.

He softened his voice.

“Maddie, this got out of hand.”

Madeline stared at him.

Her cheek still burned.

The split in her lip tasted like metal.

“You hit me.”

His eyes flicked toward Nathan.

“I lost control for one second.”

Nathan took one step forward.

Grace lifted a hand.

“Mr. Bell.”

Nathan stopped, barely.

Madeline noticed.

Her brother had more restraint than her husband had ever shown.

Celeste stood.

“This family will not be humiliated by a dramatic girl and her lawyer.”

Grace closed the folder.

“The police are on their way.”

Everett’s head snapped up.

“What?”

Madeline’s heart pounded.

Grace continued.

“The security system recorded the assault.”

“The attempted coercion.”

“And the presence of a notary during forced transfer.”

Celeste looked toward the ceiling corners.

For the first time, she noticed the cameras.

Everett did too.

His face changed.

“You recorded us?”

Madeline answered quietly.

“My father installed those cameras before he died.”

Everett looked sick.

Because for years, he had walked through Bellwick like every room had accepted him.

He had forgotten houses remember.

Richard finally spoke.

“Everett, we should leave.”

Celeste turned on him.

“Quiet.”

Madeline looked at her father-in-law.

He was not innocent.

But he was the first Cole to understand consequences had entered the house.

Everett lowered his voice.

“Madeline, if police come, this ruins everything.”

She looked at the transfer papers.

“No.”

“This protects what you tried to ruin.”

Sirens sounded faintly beyond the gates.

Celeste grabbed Everett’s arm.

“You cannot let her do this.”

Madeline almost smiled.

They still thought permission belonged to him.

Nathan picked up the fallen birthday box and placed it gently on the side table.

Then he stood beside Madeline.

Not in front of her this time.

Beside her.

That mattered.

Grace asked, “Madeline, do you want them removed from the property?”

Every face turned to her.

For the first time all morning, the question belonged to the person who owned the answer.

Madeline breathed in.

“Yes.”

Everett stared.

“You would throw out your husband?”

She looked at him with new clarity.

“No.”

May you like

“I am removing a man who hit me to steal my home.”
