Madeline did not open the birthday box until sunset.
She sat in the library where her father used to read beside the fireplace.
Nathan placed the box on the table between them.
Grace had gone home after filing emergency notices.
The police report was complete.
The locks were being changed.
The security codes had been reset.
Everett’s access to the gate had been revoked.
All of it happened quickly.
Too quickly for Madeline’s heart to catch up.
Nathan sat across from her.
“Do you want me to stay tonight?”
Madeline nodded.
Then felt embarrassed by how fast she answered.
Nathan’s face softened.
“You never have to be brave alone.”
That broke her more than the slap.
She cried then.
Not elegantly.
Not quietly.
She cried like a woman who had been holding the ceiling up with both hands and had finally been told she could let someone else stand in the room.
Nathan did not tell her to stop.
He waited.
When her breathing steadied, he pushed the birthday box closer.
“Dad’s watch.”
Madeline opened it.
The restored watch gleamed against dark velvet.
For a moment, she was thirteen again, sitting beside Charles in the unfinished sunroom, watching him fix a broken window latch.
He had always believed broken things deserved repair.
But he had also known not everything broken was safe to keep.
Inside the box was a folded note from Nathan.
Not Charles.
Nathan.
I know you loved him.
I know you wanted to be wrong about him.
But Dad protected the house so you would never have to choose between shelter and survival.
Come home to yourself.
Madeline pressed the note to her chest.
“I feel stupid,” she whispered.
Nathan shook his head.
“You were hopeful.”
“There’s a difference.”
“He fooled everyone.”
“No.”
Nathan looked around the library.
“He fooled people who wanted access.”
“He did not fool Dad.”
Madeline looked at the watch.
Then at the door Everett had been forced through.
“What happens now?”
Nathan answered gently.
