PART 7

The police entered through the front hall at 11:18 a.m.

Two officers.

Calm.

Professional.

Unimpressed by marble floors or family names.

Grace met them with documents.

Madeline gave a statement with Nathan beside her.

The notary gave one too.

That was the part Everett had not expected.

He thought strangers could be pressured like relatives.

But the notary had seen his hand strike Madeline’s face.

She had heard the threat.

She had seen the papers.

She told the officers exactly that.

Celeste tried to interrupt three times.

The second officer finally said, “Ma’am, if you continue, you will be asked to wait outside.”

Celeste looked as if no one had ever spoken to her without admiration before.

Everett kept repeating one sentence.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Madeline listened until she could not.

“A misunderstanding is when someone uses the wrong glass at dinner.”

“This was a plan.”

The first officer turned toward Everett.

“Sir, you need to step away from her.”

Everett’s face reddened.

“She is my wife.”

The officer said, “And she is the property owner requesting removal.”

That sentence entered the room like a locked door.

Celeste grabbed her purse.

“You are making a terrible mistake, Madeline.”

Madeline looked at her.

“No.”

“I made the mistake when I kept mistaking your cruelty for family.”

Richard stood silently and walked toward the door.

Everett did not move.

He stared at Madeline.

“You’ll regret this.”

Nathan’s voice dropped.

“Say one more threat.”

Everett glanced at the officers and swallowed the rest.

The officers escorted him outside.

Celeste followed, furious and shaking.

Richard followed last, older than he had looked an hour before.

From the doorway, Everett turned back.

“This house will feel empty without me.”

Madeline touched her swollen cheek.

Then looked past him into the living room.

At the table.

The papers.

The flowers.

The birthday box.

“No,” she said.

“It already did.”

The door closed behind him.
