PART 5

Nathan had planned to surprise Madeline with their father’s restored watch.

It was inside the birthday box.

Charles Bell had worn it every day until his final hospital stay.

Nathan had repaired the cracked glass and replaced the worn leather band.

He thought Madeline might cry when she opened it.

Instead, he walked in and found her crying for a different reason.

The box hit the floor.

Everett turned toward him with irritation, not fear.

“Nathan, this is private.”

Nathan looked at Madeline’s cheek.

“No.”

“It became mine when you touched her.”

Everett stepped forward.

“You don’t come into my house and threaten me.”

Nathan’s face went still.

“Your house?”

Madeline whispered, “Nathan, don’t.”

Not because she wanted to protect Everett.

Because she knew her brother’s anger had rules, but not softness.

Grace Holloway stepped in behind him.

She had been waiting outside in the car because Madeline hoped she would not be needed.

Grace looked at the room once and understood enough.

She opened the legal folder.

“Mr. Cole, Bellwick Manor is owned solely by Madeline Bell Hart through premarital inheritance and protected trust conveyance.”

Everett’s jaw tightened.

“I’m her husband.”

Grace looked at him calmly.

“That gives you no ownership.”

Celeste snapped, “This is absurd.”

Grace turned to her.

“Mrs. Cole, you are also not an owner.”

Celeste’s face flushed.

Richard lowered his eyes.

Everett pointed at the transfer papers.

“She agreed to discuss this.”

Madeline wiped her cheek.

“No.”

“You arranged it.”

Nathan moved between them.

“Take your hand off my sister.”

Everett glanced toward the notary.

The notary was packing her bag.

Fast.

Celeste noticed and hissed, “Sit down.”

The notary shook her head.

“I will not notarize a coerced signature.”

Those words shifted the room.

Coerced.

Not emotional.

Not marital.

Not misunderstanding.

Coerced.

Grace placed a copy of the deed on the table.

“The deed is in her name only.”

Everett stared at it.

Then at Madeline.

His mask cracked.

“You called them?”

Madeline touched her cheek again.

“I warned them.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew you would try.”

That answer hurt him more than the deed.

Not because he felt guilt.

May you like

Because it meant she had stopped trusting him before he finished taking from her.
