Chapter 2 - THE LETTERS PEARL NEVER RECEIVEDJade carried the returned letters into Leonard’s private office after the relatives were dismissed.
Miranda and Travis refused to leave the building until security threatened to escort them out. Their attorney announced they would challenge the will on grounds of incapacity and undue influence.
Leonard closed the office door.
“You should photograph every item before taking anything home.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother will claim the evidence was manufactured.”
Jade held up a sealed birthday card.
“It was in your custody.”
“For nine months.”
“And before that?”
Leonard hesitated.
“Pearl’s residence.”
Jade studied him.
“My grandmother warned me not to trust anyone in that room.”
“Yes.”
“That includes you.”
“Yes.”
His willingness to admit it unsettled her more than denial would have.
Nurse Evelyn Brooks arrived under a confidentiality waiver Pearl had signed before entering hospice care. She appeared exhausted and ashamed.
“Mrs. Harrow asked for you every week,” Evelyn said.
Jade’s throat tightened.
“You told me she became hysterical when I called.”
“Miranda was standing beside me.”
“You could have told the truth.”
“She threatened my nursing license. She knew my husband’s medical debts. Travis offered to pay them if I cooperated.”
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn admitted altering Pearl’s visitor list, returning Jade’s letters, and deleting voice messages from the room phone.
Pearl eventually realized what was happening.
“She began writing cards and hiding them inside books,” Evelyn said. “Miranda searched the room every night.”
“Did Pearl know I kept trying?”
“At first, no. Later, she found one card that Miranda missed.”
Jade looked down at the pile.
“Which one?”
“A blue envelope with a silver moon.”
It was not among the returned letters.
Leonard opened Pearl’s medical contact records. Jade’s name had been removed from the emergency list six months before Pearl died. Miranda’s signature authorized the change, but another witness signature appeared beneath it.
Travis Harrow.
Evelyn continued.
“Pearl asked me to contact Mr. Hale privately. That is when the second file began.”
Jade turned toward Leonard.
“You knew this for months.”
“I knew visits were being restricted.”
“And you did nothing?”
“I filed a petition for an independent patient advocate. It vanished inside the court system.”
“Petitions do not vanish.”
“This one did.”
A judge named Roland Price denied the request within two hours without a hearing. Travis’s company had donated to Price’s judicial foundation for years.
Pearl stopped trusting ordinary legal channels.
She began documenting everything herself.
Evelyn produced a small digital recorder.
Pearl’s voice emerged weak but clear.
“Miranda believes isolation will make me surrender the Harrow trust. She forgets I built the trust after surviving her father.”
Jade froze.
Miranda rarely spoke about her father, Arthur Harrow. The family story said he died from a heart attack when Miranda was twenty.
Pearl continued.
“If they block Jade again, send the blue letter to Daniel.”
The recording ended.
Jade looked at Leonard.
“Daniel was my father.”
“Yes.”
“He died twelve years ago.”
“That is what the records say.”
Jade remembered the boating accident, the closed coffin, and Miranda’s refusal to let her attend the investigation hearing.
Evelyn whispered, “Pearl did not speak about Daniel as though he were dead.”
Before Jade could respond, Leonard’s assistant entered carrying a courier envelope delivered during the will reading.
No return address.
Inside was the missing blue letter with the silver moon.
It had been opened.
Pearl’s message remained inside.
Jade, your father discovered why Miranda needed me alone. If Daniel is still alive, he will come when the protected estate changes hands.
A photograph slipped from the envelope.
It showed Daniel Mason entering Pearl’s townhouse three months earlier.
The timestamp was clear.
