Chapter 23 - THE MAN WHO STOLE EIGHTEEN MILLIONTravis Harrow’s defense began with confession.
He stole money.
Forged Leonard’s identity.
Paid Evelyn’s husband’s debts.
Used Harrow Medical Transport.
Set fire to the printing plant.
Ordered the archive lockdown.
Held a hostage.
Prepared the patient leak.
Then he drew a line.
“I did not create the Price system.”
No one claimed he did.
He had entered an existing network and made it more profitable.
Travis’s father managed hospital acquisitions for Arthur. As a teenager, Travis learned that elderly patients with confused records produced inexpensive property.
He later married Miranda because she possessed access to Pearl’s trust.
He also claimed he loved her.
Miranda testified:
“He loved the version of me that believed winning Mother’s money would heal me.”
“Did you love him?” prosecutors asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you knowingly sign transfers?”
“Four.”
“Did he force you?”
“He manipulated my resentment. He did not move my hand.”
Miranda’s accuracy damaged Travis more than a claim of total coercion would have.
Daniel testified about the boat.
Travis had planted an explosive beneath the fuel compartment. He expected Daniel to survive long enough to surrender the recorder after rescue teams arrived.
The blast spread faster than planned.
“I did not intend murder,” Travis said in an interview played for the jury.
“You placed an explosive beneath an occupied boat,” the prosecutor answered.
“I designed an escape route.”
“For yourself?”
“For Daniel.”
The jury could consider intent without accepting the word design as safety.
Claire testified that Miranda drove Daniel away after the explosion. Travis followed for months and used Jade’s location to pressure him.
“Did he threaten Ruby?” the defense asked.
“We believed Ruby died.”
“Then he did not.”
“He threatened every child Daniel might have.”
The evidence supported general threats, not knowledge of Ruby.
Travis was convicted of attempted murder, conspiracy, theft, identity fraud, arson, unlawful confinement, elder exploitation, obstruction, attempted evidence destruction, and witness intimidation.
He was acquitted of planning Ruby’s clinic removal. Celeste and the Prices controlled that operation.
The eighteen million dollars entered restitution after ownership review. Some belonged to Pearl’s trust. Most belonged to the patient-compensation reserve.
Travis’s personal property and shell-company assets were seized where connected to crime. Miranda retained her lawful marital share after courts separated it.
At sentencing, Jade spoke once.
“You repeatedly used my mother’s resentment as though understanding her injury made your exploitation less deliberate. She chose harm. You selected that harm because it opened accounts.”
Travis received a sentence likely to keep him imprisoned for life.
His cooperation against Celeste and the Prices reduced several financial counts, not the violence.
The court ordered no contact with Miranda, Jade, Ruby, Pearl, Daniel, Claire, or Evelyn.
He asked to send Miranda one letter.
She declined.
Travis’s documents revealed the identity of the cadaver used during Pearl’s false death.
Her name was Teresa Lane.
Seventy-one.
A resident at a Price-controlled nursing home.
Teresa had no signed donation authorization. She died after pneumonia, and Dr. Price transferred her body before her daughter could arrange burial.
Pearl had been told the body came from a lawful medical-donation program.
She did not verify.
Claire transported the covered body.
Leonard filed the death paperwork based on the physician’s certificate.
Miranda closed the coffin.
Daniel helped move Pearl from the clinic.
Several adults participated without knowing Teresa’s name because not knowing made the plan easier.
Her daughter, Anna Lane, had spent months asking where her mother’s remains went.
The Price network told her a cremation error destroyed them.
