Chapter 28 - VIVIAN MASON’S VERDICTVivian did not deny receiving the payments.
She described them as recovery funds owed to her after Pearl stole Jade.
No court had awarded them.
No client had authorized them.
Celeste transferred administrative fees from victim settlements into Vivian’s shell companies. Vivian used the money to monitor Jade, bribe clinic staff, maintain the Maine cabin, and later operate the island hospital.
She also paid lawyers for women whose children had been removed through Price guardianships.
“Did those women know the money came from other victims?” prosecutors asked.
“No.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
Vivian believed she was redistributing resources toward people the system ignored.
The same language had justified Pearl, Celeste, and the Price network in different directions.
Her trial addressed Daniel’s marina ambush, Pearl’s kidnapping, Daniel’s confinement, the archive lockdown, surveillance of Jade, fraud, extortion, and conspiracy.
Her assault by Arthur and forged adoption surrender were admitted as history and mitigation.
They were not placed before the jury as permission.
Pearl testified.
“I took Jade without Vivian’s informed consent.”
“Did Vivian later attempt to kill Jade?” prosecutors asked.
“She created a system where Jade’s death would transfer authority. I do not know whether she wanted the gas to kill her personally.”
Vivian’s attorney asked Pearl why she should be trusted.
“She should not be trusted without documents.”
The answer denied Pearl the moral height her age and rescue work might otherwise create.
Daniel testified that Vivian once protected him from Arthur.
As children, she stood between him and violence.
Years later, she reported his investigation to Judge Price.
“Did she love you?” the defense asked.
“Yes.”
“Why betray you?”
“She believed controlling the danger was the only way to keep me alive and recover Jade.”
“Was she right?”
“No.”
Jade testified through a limited session.
“Do you consider Vivian your mother?” the defense asked.
“She gave birth to me.”
“That was not my question.”
“I do not have a relationship that makes the ordinary word accurate.”
“Did Pearl prevent that relationship?”
“Yes.”
“Did Miranda benefit from it?”
“Yes.”
“Did Daniel remain silent?”
“Yes.”
“Then Vivian is the only parent who never had a chance.”
“She had twenty-eight years to approach me without surveillance, kidnapping, a trust demand, or a gunman. Pearl stole the first chance. Vivian chose what to do with later ones.”
The jury convicted Vivian of kidnapping, conspiracy, financial fraud, witness intimidation, unlawful surveillance, obstruction, and reckless attempted killing through the archive system.
She was acquitted of ordering the church shooting. Travis had acted without her agreement.
Vivian received a long sentence, reduced for surrender, cooperation, her original victimization, and evidence that helped stop the patient leak.
At sentencing, she asked Jade to look at her.
Jade did.
“I loved you every year,” Vivian said.
Jade answered:
“You loved the child taken from you. You did not know the woman I became.”
“Will you let me?”
“Not because a sentence makes time urgent.”
Vivian entered custody.
Jade visited once after three years.
They discussed Arthur’s medical history and Vivian’s childhood with Daniel.
The second visit happened two years later.
No schedule followed.
Vivian never received control of Arthur’s hidden inheritance. Her economic claim as a victim of assault and coerced surrender was resolved separately through compensation and restitution.
Jade’s existence did not become the asset used to pay her.
The island hospital closed. Current patients moved through individualized plans. Some had chosen private care lawfully. Others had been confined through false guardianships.
The property was sold after evidence review. Proceeds funded restitution.
Vivian’s final cooperation revealed one more hidden file from Daniel’s undercover years.
He had signed an agreement authorizing Claire to raise any child born during protection without contacting Jade or Miranda until the foundation investigation ended.
The agreement contained no six-week limit.
Daniel’s claim that he intended to disappear briefly had been true at first.
