Chapter 9 - THE THIRD FILETravis entered the conference room without an attorney.
He placed the third file on the table and stepped away.
“Miranda gave this to me years ago.”
Jade remained standing.
“Pearl’s video was recorded today.”
“I know.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t.”
“Where is Daniel?”
“I was hoping the file would tell us.”
Travis claimed Miranda had hidden the folder inside a safe at their Connecticut home. After the will reading, she ordered him to destroy it.
He opened it instead.
“Why betray her now?” Jade asked.
“Because Pearl has arranged for everyone to blame me.”
“The ledger shows you stole eighteen million dollars.”
“I stole money. I did not kill Daniel or abduct Pearl.”
He spoke as though one crime should purchase innocence from another.
Leonard examined the seal.
It was genuine.
The instructions required Jade to open it only after rejecting a settlement from Miranda.
She had.
Inside was Pearl’s handwritten directive appointing Jade temporary chair of the Harrow Victim Foundation.
Another document granted her access to the central evidence archive.
A black access card rested beneath it.
Travis looked at the card with open fear.
“What is that?”
“The reason you came,” Jade said.
He had not known the folder’s contents.
Pearl’s letter explained that the foundation archive occupied a secure floor beneath Harrow Media’s current headquarters. Only the chair could enter.
The archive held original patient testimony, financial records, and recordings related to Daniel’s investigation.
Pearl warned that one board member served the Price network.
She did not name the person.
The board included Leonard, Miranda, Travis, Owen Reese, hospital advocate Celeste Morgan, and three independent directors.
Any of them could be the insider.
Jade refused to enter the archive alone.
Federal observers accompanied her.
The underground floor opened through biometric confirmation.
Rows of evidence cabinets filled the space.
One screen displayed Pearl’s living status as Protected Witness Active.
Daniel’s status read the same.
A third protected witness appeared.
Miranda Harrow.
Jade stared.
Her mother had been registered as a federal source for eighteen months.
Travis looked genuinely stunned.
“She was informing on me?”
Miranda entered through the elevator behind them.
“No. I was informing on the Prices.”
She explained that Pearl forced her to choose after discovering the intercepted letters. Cooperate or face immediate exposure for financial abuse.
Miranda agreed to gather evidence while continuing to appear loyal to Travis.
“You still threatened me,” Jade said.
“I needed him to believe I wanted the inheritance.”
“You crushed my wrist when he wasn’t under the table.”
Miranda looked away.
“The hatred was real.”
The confession mattered.
Her undercover role did not erase cruelty.
The archive contained recordings of Travis meeting Judge Price and Dr. Price. They discussed moving Pearl from hospice and using the false death to locate Daniel.
But the plan had been reversed.
Pearl and Daniel used Claire to escape before Travis’s ambulance reached the final clinic.
Travis believed he controlled the transfer.
He transported a decoy patient.
“Where did they go?” Jade asked.
Miranda pointed toward a sealed cabinet.
“Pearl never told me.”
The cabinet opened with the black card.
Inside were three passports, emergency cash, and a map of coastal Maine.
There was also a recent photograph of Pearl and Daniel standing beside a woman Jade recognized.
Nurse Evelyn.
Evelyn had not merely confessed after the will reading.
She had been helping Pearl from the beginning.
Before Jade could confront her, the archive alarm activated.
Someone upstairs had initiated a fire-suppression lockdown.
The elevator sealed.
Oxygen levels began dropping.
Travis moved toward an emergency panel.
Miranda stopped him.
“That panel releases gas.”
He looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because I helped design the trap for Daniel.”
Everyone turned.
Miranda’s cooperation with Pearl had begun later than she claimed.
