Chapter 13 - Quiet HarborDiane called Avery before investigators located her.

The hospital room had been restored enough for secure communication. Avery remained in bed while Vanessa sat under supervision near the window.

Charles stood beside Nora.

Malcolm remained unarmed and without active credentials.

Diane appeared on the television from an unknown location.

She looked elegant, calm, and entirely unsurprised that Quiet Harbor had been searched.

“I wondered when you would examine the charitable accounts,” she said.

Avery signed.

Why did you increase the attack?

Diane read the movements.

“Because controlled pressure would never force you to open the archive.”

“You wanted me dead.”

“No. I wanted you to believe survival required control.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You told Lucas the men would only frighten her.”

“I told Lucas what he needed to hear.”

“You used my money.”

“You offered it.”

Diane considered Vanessa’s resentment predictable and Avery’s determination exploitable.

She believed both sisters had inherited Charles’s greatest flaw.

They trusted systems more than people.

Diane founded Quiet Harbor after seeing deaf patients denied interpreters and coerced into medical decisions they did not understand. She helped finance Avery’s early technology because she believed it could correct that injustice.

Then Meridian used the same technology to manufacture consent.

Diane decided Archive Zero could no longer remain under Sloan family authority.

Her solution was not independent review.

She wanted to destroy the archive completely.

The attack was intended to force Avery to activate Recovery, reunite the distributed data, and bring the physical keys into one room.

Diane planned to erase everything at once.

“What about the stolen settlement money?” Nora asked.

“Return it to verified patients.”

“And the criminal evidence?”

“Destroy it.”

“You would protect the people who stole from them.”

“I would prevent thousands of patients from having their diagnoses, identities, and locations exposed.”

Avery signed.

You created a false choice.

Diane smiled.

“You sound like your father.”

The upload Avery started had divided the archive before Diane could destroy it. Protected identities were already moving into independent trusts.

Diane’s original plan had failed.

Yet she retained one advantage.

Quiet Harbor controlled the encryption licenses used by those trusts.

She could still revoke access.

Avery asked where she was.

Diane turned the camera.

Behind her stood Helen Shaw.

The missing accessibility officer was no longer in Sublevel C.

Nora checked the guarded medical room.

Helen’s bed was empty.

A nurse had transferred her using a federal order bearing Michael Trent’s credentials.

Michael remained under integrity review.

His badge had been cloned.

Again.

Diane claimed Helen came willingly.

Helen’s expression suggested otherwise.

She held a document against her chest.

The original Sloan founder charter.

Charles stared at it.

Diane had removed it from company custody before his plane crash.

The charter contained a clause no digital version preserved.

If Sloan technology were used to fabricate medical consent, ownership transferred automatically to Quiet Harbor Foundation.

Diane did not need the forged resignation.

She already possessed a legal path to seize the company.

“Why involve Vanessa?” Avery asked.

“To expose the financial crimes.”

“Why involve Lucas?”

“To expose the board.”

“Why allow Mercer to control the hospital?”

“To expose Meridian.”

Diane had constructed overlapping betrayals so every conspirator would reveal evidence against the others.

Avery’s injuries became the fuel for an operation Diane considered necessary.

Charles looked at his sister.

“You became exactly what you claimed to fight.”

“I became someone willing to finish the work.”

Helen suddenly raised one hand.

She signed quickly before Diane pulled the document away.

Avery understood.

Charter is altered. Check page nine.

The original founder charter Diane displayed was not genuine.

She had manufactured the document using physical paper from the correct period and Charles’s archived signature.

The forgery technology was no longer limited to digital evidence.

Diane could create convincing history.

Then the hospital fire alarm activated.

The television feed remained open.

Diane smiled.

“Page nine is waiting in Avery’s room.”

Smoke began entering through the ventilation system.

Vanessa looked beneath the hospital bed.

A sealed envelope had been taped to the frame.

It had not been there moments earlier.

Someone inside the secured room had placed it without being seen.

👉 Diane claimed the company through an original charter, but Helen’s warning revealed even the physical history had been forged—and someone inside Avery’s locked room was helping her.
