Chapter 9 - Sublevel CEmergency lights illuminated the corridor.

Nora led the descent through a service stairwell while Malcolm remained beside Avery.
Vanessa was secured to the visitor chair with a medical restraint after she attempted to reach the evidence folder. She claimed she only wanted to remove the transmitter.
No one trusted her intention.
Avery watched Nora’s body-camera feed on a disconnected tablet.
Sublevel C resembled a hospital ward built inside a data center.
Server racks lined one wall.
Patient rooms lined the other.
Each door carried a number instead of a name.
The first rooms were empty.
The fourth contained Helen Shaw.
She sat beside a terminal with an IV in her arm. She was conscious but disoriented.
Nora identified herself.
Helen looked toward the camera.
“Avery cannot open the archive.”
“Why?”
“Because Charles changed the founder protocol.”
Helen had discovered the board’s emergency charter amendment before her disappearance. Lucas ordered her to authenticate it.
She refused.
Meridian contractors brought her to Sublevel C and used a neurological drug intended to impair memory formation.
Charles intervened remotely.
He stopped the dosage from becoming lethal.
He did not release her.
Instead, he demanded that Helen help separate protected patient identities from financial evidence inside Archive Zero.
“He said exposure would endanger people,” Helen whispered.
“Was he right?” Nora asked.
“Partly.”
The answer reflected the entire network.
Real danger existed.
So did real imprisonment.
Helen pointed toward the central server room.
Archive Zero’s physical key was stored there.
Avery’s motion sequence opened the digital layer.
Charles’s heartbeat pattern opened the founder layer.
A third authorization belonged to Dr. Mercer.
The three keys were designed to prevent unilateral control.
Lucas could not open the archive without Mercer.
Mercer could not open it without Avery.
Charles could not release the records alone.
The attack and forged resignation were meant to bring all three authorities under Meridian’s control.
Nora’s team entered the server room.
A medical chair stood beneath an array of cameras.
Restraints surrounded the armrests.
The room was designed to capture Avery’s complete signing sequence under force.
Malcolm looked at the screen.
“They planned to bring her here.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
She had believed the assault would frighten Avery into signing the resignation.
Lucas had planned to use her body as a key.
Nora recovered storage drives from the central console.
One contained the list of thirty-seven protected witnesses.
Another contained payment trails reaching hospital systems, insurance companies, judges, and federal contractors.
A third was labeled:
SLOAN FAMILY CONTINUITY.
Before Nora could open it, Sublevel C entered lockdown.
Steel doors sealed both ends of the corridor.
Dr. Mercer appeared on the server-room screen.
“You have mistaken confinement for control,” she said.
Nora ordered the doors opened.
Mercer ignored her.
She addressed Avery through the body camera.
“Your father designed Archive Zero after learning that ordinary justice could not protect patients. Then he discovered the same system could protect institutions.”
Avery signed to the camera.
Where is he?
Mercer smiled.
“Closer than you believe.”
The hospital bed beneath Avery shifted.
A mechanical lock released under the mattress.
Malcolm pulled the bed away from the wall.
A narrow medical lift was hidden beneath it.
The smart recovery room had been constructed directly above the Archive Zero server chamber.
Avery had spent three days sleeping over the physical vault.
The lift activated automatically.
The bed began descending.
Malcolm grabbed the frame.
Vanessa screamed.
The hospital room floor opened beneath them.
Avery, Malcolm, and Vanessa dropped slowly into the darkness below.
Nora’s team stood on the other side of the locked server-room door.
Through the descending lift, Avery saw a man waiting in Sublevel C.
Charles Sloan.
Alive.

He held the founder key.
👉 Avery finally reached her living father, but the hidden lift delivered Vanessa and Malcolm into the sealed archive chamber with him.
