Avery remained at home recovering from emergency surgery related to the infection that completed her hearing loss.
Vanessa told everyone she identified their father.
She had not.
Lucas Wren met her outside the morgue and said the body was too damaged for visual confirmation. He showed her dental records and their father’s ring.
Vanessa signed the identification form.
“You let me bury him without knowing,” Avery signed.
“I was twenty-nine. Lucas said the evidence was conclusive.”
“You told me you saw him.”
“I thought you needed certainty.”
Avery turned away.
Vanessa had always converted uncertainty into control.
The plane belonged to Meridian Health Procurement.
Charles Sloan had been traveling to Washington with evidence of fraudulent hospital contracts.
Lucas inherited Charles’s board seat after the crash.
Dr. Mercer became Meridian’s chief executive three months later.
The two careers rose from the same fire.
Nora reopened the crash records.
The dental comparison had been performed by a private laboratory owned by Meridian.
The ring presented to Vanessa had no evidence-chain documentation.

Avery remembered the system’s earliest version.
Her father helped her build it.
Archive Zero began as a personal emergency vault after a hospital repeatedly ignored Avery’s requests for a qualified interpreter.
Charles wanted patients to control their own records.
He embedded a founder-level override that Avery later believed she removed.
If the override remained, Charles could still enter the archive.
The disabled smart-room network suddenly came alive again.
Not through the hospital connection.
Through Avery’s IV pump.
A blue light flashed near the medication cartridge.
Malcolm removed the cover.
Inside was a miniature wireless transmitter.
Someone installed it before Vanessa entered.
The device had continued uploading Avery’s hand movements even after the wall systems were disconnected.
Reconstruction reached eighty-two percent.
Emily? No Emily in this story. Nora called the hospital pharmacy and obtained the medication-delivery log.
The IV bag came from a secure compounding room.
Only two people accessed it.
A licensed pharmacist named Ellen Porter.
And Dr. Mercer.
Nora ordered both detained for questioning.
Mercer had already left the hospital.
Her vehicle exited the garage ten minutes before the false transfer team arrived.
The pharmacy’s security feed showed Ellen placing the transmitter inside the pump.
She did not appear threatened.
When investigators reached her apartment, they found it empty.
A flight reservation had been made under her name.
Destination: Zurich.
The same city where Sloan maintained its international data backup.
Vanessa suddenly understood.
“The thirty-one million went through Switzerland.”
Recovery pulled the money back.
But the accounts may have carried more than funds.
Each transfer included encrypted pieces of Archive Zero.
Vanessa’s theft operation had distributed the archive across twelve financial institutions.
Recovery reunited the pieces.
By recovering the money, Avery may have rebuilt the evidence in one location.
Lucas did not fear Recovery.
He needed it.
Avery reached for the remote.
The television activated despite the severed network.
A private video appeared.
Charles Sloan sat inside a plain room.
He looked older, but unmistakably alive.
“Avery,” he signed, “if you see this, Recovery has completed and Lucas knows where I am.”
Vanessa stepped toward the screen.
“Dad?”
Charles looked directly into the camera.
“Do not trust the investigators outside your door.”
The recording ended.
The silhouettes behind the glass had not moved.
One investigator raised a phone.
