Chapter 8 - The Father Behind the CamerasThe hospital administrators demanded that Avery surrender the smart-room controls.

Nora presented the federal warrant.

The attorneys presented Judge Cole’s order.

Neither side moved.

Avery watched the argument through the locked glass door.

The people outside discussed her body, her technology, and her safety as though she were not capable of deciding anything herself.

She pressed the remote.

The door speaker activated.

“I do not consent to transfer.”

Every face turned toward her.

Her voice remained uneven after years of limited use, but the words were clear.

The administrator attempted to argue that she lacked capacity because of pain medication.

Avery lifted the medication log.

She had refused the sedative dose ordered after Vanessa entered.

The chart had been altered to show it was administered.

The IV line was empty.

Another false medical record had been created.

Nora documented the discrepancy.

Judge Cole’s order relied on the claim that Avery was sedated and unable to manage the cyber incident.

The legal foundation began collapsing.

Then Malcolm found a second camera inside the smoke detector.

It did not belong to the smart-room prototype.

The device transmitted directly to the Vermont estate.

Avery’s father—or whoever used his identity—had watched Vanessa slap her and confess.

He had not intervened.

Vanessa looked sick.

“Why would Dad allow that?”

Avery signed one answer.

Evidence.

Charles had always believed undeniable proof required people to reveal themselves without warning.

He taught Avery to preserve original records.

He also taught Vanessa that weakness invited control.

Both lessons could grow into cruelty.

Nora’s team searched the Vermont estate.

The cameras were linked to a control terminal carrying recent fingerprints.

The prints matched Charles Sloan.

The facility also held medical supplies, passports, and correspondence between Charles and Dr. Mercer.

One letter read:

Avery must activate Recovery herself. Vanessa’s theft is the only path Lucas will trust.

Charles knew about Vanessa’s plan.

He allowed her to steal the thirty-one million because Lucas needed to believe Archive Zero was compromised.

He expected Avery’s automatic recovery system to expose the hidden accounts.

But the letter did not mention the assault.

Another message from Mercer did.

Vanessa has agreed to pressure. Wren’s men will ensure physical compliance.

Charles replied:

No permanent damage. Avery must remain capable of authorization.

Avery stared at the words.

Her father had known violence was planned.

He placed limits around it as though cruelty became acceptable when measured.

Vanessa read the exchange.

“You knew he was alive?” Avery signed.

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“I swear.”

“Lucas communicated through Dad’s old company account. I thought it was an automated trust.”

Vanessa had believed she was working with Lucas alone.

Charles used the same channel to shape events while remaining hidden.

The sisters had been manipulated from opposite sides.

Yet Vanessa still paid the men.

Charles still permitted the attack.

Lucas still escalated it.

Responsibility did not disappear because multiple people shared it.

The Vermont team found a hidden door behind the control room.

Inside were files on thirty-seven disabled whistleblowers whose identities had been altered after reporting medical fraud.

Some were living voluntarily under protection.

Others had repeatedly requested release.

Charles’s network had become another system deciding when vulnerable people were allowed to return to their own lives.

One file belonged to Helen Shaw, Sloan’s missing accessibility officer.

Her status read:

RELOCATED TODAY—HOSPITAL SUBLEVEL C.

Helen was beneath Avery’s room.

The false medical transfer had been designed to move Avery to the same underground level.

Nora checked the hospital plans.

Sublevel C did not appear on public maps.

Malcolm knew it existed.

Years earlier, Meridian funded a disaster-recovery data center beneath the hospital.

Avery looked at him.

“You knew there was another level?”

“I knew there was a server floor. Not a patient unit.”

The evidence folder vibrated.

A hidden transmitter inside its spine activated.

Vanessa had carried the folder into the room.

It had been transmitting every investigation update downward.

Someone beneath them knew Helen’s location had been discovered.

The floor lights turned red.

The hospital elevator descended below the basement.

Then the building lost power.

👉 Charles had knowingly permitted controlled violence against Avery, while a hidden transmitter warned the underground hospital unit that investigators were coming.
