Chapter 4 - SophieVanessa called Daniel ten minutes after the video appeared.
“Delete it.”
Daniel placed the call on speakerphone while Rachel recorded.
“Where is Sophie?”
“She is not your concern.”
“She was taken through the same system you planned to use against Lily.”
“You do not know what happened.”
“Then explain it.”
Vanessa’s voice shook.
At twenty-two, she became pregnant by a man Margaret considered socially unacceptable. Margaret insisted the child remain hidden until the family decided how to present the situation.
Sophie was born under another surname.
For five years, Vanessa raised her quietly in a guesthouse behind the mansion.
Mark entered Vanessa’s life during the fourth year.
Margaret offered to arrange the marriage if Vanessa signed temporary guardianship of Sophie to a family trust.
Vanessa believed the arrangement would last through the wedding.
Instead, Paul Hart declared her unstable and removed Sophie.
“Why didn’t you fight?” Emily asked.
“I did.”
“You signed statements against yourself.”
“Margaret threatened to expose Mark’s financial crimes.”
Mark had used company accounts to hide gambling losses and unauthorized loans. If the truth emerged, he faced prison and Vanessa’s marriage collapsed before it began.
Margaret offered a choice.
Sophie or Mark.
Vanessa chose Mark.
The admission left the hotel room silent.
Lily sat on the bed wearing headphones and watching a cartoon, unaware of the conversation.
Emily looked toward her daughter.
“You punished Lily to protect the same people who took Sophie.”
“I did not know Margaret would hit you.”
“You watched.”
“I thought the complaint was leverage.”
“You signed it.”
“I wanted the folder back before Paul filed anything.”
Vanessa claimed she hid the evidence behind her clothes because she planned to use it against Margaret someday.
Daniel almost laughed.
“You signed every page.”
“Because Paul needed handwriting samples.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It does if you understand the real target.”
The forged child-welfare complaints were not designed only to take Lily.
They were meant to force Daniel to sign over his voting shares in Delaney Hospitality.
Margaret controlled forty percent of the company.
Daniel controlled thirty-five.
Vanessa and Mark controlled the rest.
Daniel had refused a proposed sale to Westbridge Capital because the deal would eliminate hundreds of jobs and transfer hotel properties into debt-heavy shell companies.
Margaret needed his shares.
If Emily lost custody and Daniel was portrayed as enabling her, Margaret could pressure him to surrender control in exchange for Lily’s return.
The same machinery used against Vanessa years earlier had been rebuilt for Daniel.
Rachel spread the bank transfers across the desk.
“Who is Westbridge?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Mark’s real employer.”
Mark had secretly worked with Westbridge for six years, purchasing distressed family businesses through manipulated debt.
He married Vanessa partly to gain access to Delaney Hospitality.
Margaret knew.
She welcomed him because Westbridge promised her a cash payout and lifetime control of the mansion.
Vanessa claimed she discovered the truth two months earlier.
That was when she found Paul’s burner phone and copied part of the secret folder.
“Where is Sophie?” Emily asked again.
“I don’t know.”
“Who does?”
“Paul.”
Anna Briggs sent another file.
It contained a current photograph of Sophie, now seventeen.
She stood outside a private boarding school in Vermont.
The school’s tuition records listed her guardian as Margaret Delaney.
Margaret had not sent Sophie away permanently.
She had raised the girl under another identity while telling Vanessa she was unreachable.
Vanessa began crying over the phone.
“Send me the address.”
Emily’s expression hardened.
“You do not get to use Lily’s suffering as the road back to your daughter.”
Daniel agreed to provide the information only through police and an independent child advocate.
Vanessa’s grief did not erase her conspiracy.
Then Mark’s voice appeared behind her.
“You should not have called them.”
A sharp sound followed.
The line disconnected.
Daniel tried again.
No answer.
The burner phone received another message.
