Chapter 8 - Rachel’s VisitRachel did not deny entering Room 214.
She admitted using the emergency key at 3:17 a.m.
She claimed she entered because Daniel failed to answer repeated calls and she feared Margaret had reached them.
“Why didn’t you wake us?” Daniel asked.
“You were all asleep. I checked the window and the connecting door.”
“And Lily’s dress?”
“I did not touch it.”
The hallway camera showed Rachel carrying nothing when she left.
The camera inside the elevator showed her opening her handbag.
A small black object rested in her palm.
Rachel stared at the image.
“That is not the memory card.”
“What is it?”
“A tracker I found beneath the hotel desk.”
She produced the device from an evidence envelope inside her briefcase.
She claimed she intended to give it to Sarah but became distracted when Paul arrived.
Daniel no longer accepted explanations built on trust.
“Why didn’t you document finding it?”
Rachel’s voice sharpened.
“Because I was working through a rapidly evolving emergency while your family controlled the police response, child-services process, and court calendar.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No. It is the reason I made a mistake.”
Sarah examined the tracker.
It had transmitted the hotel location to Mark’s phone.
Removing it may have prevented another intrusion.
But the missing memory card remained unexplained.
Grace remembered Lily waking around four and asking for water. The child mentioned “the nice lady” had fixed her blanket.
Rachel said she never approached the bed.
Another person had entered.
The hotel’s electronic lock recorded only Rachel’s key.
Someone followed before the door closed.
A shadow appeared briefly behind her on the hallway footage.
The person wore a dark coat and moved with a limp.
Anna Briggs studied the image.
“Rose Carter walked like that.”
Emily looked at her.
“My mother is dead.”
Rose suffered a hip injury while working at the mansion. Her gait remained uneven afterward.
The shadow resembled her.
Sarah searched the hotel’s rear cameras.
A woman entered through the service stairwell wearing a maintenance uniform. Her face remained hidden, but her height and movement matched Rose’s old employment records.
She left with a silver object in one hand.
The carved hairpin.
Someone had taken both the card and hairpin from Lily’s dress.
Emily’s grief turned into anger.
“My mother died in hospice. I saw her body.”
Anna lowered her eyes.
“No. You saw a closed coffin.”
Rose’s death certificate had been signed by Dr. Elaine Porter, now the Hawthorne administrator.
Margaret arranged the funeral.
Emily never viewed the body because she was told advanced illness had changed Rose’s appearance.
Rose may have entered the same false-death system later used against Sophie.
Anna believed Rose remained alive for at least six months after the funeral. Anonymous files continued reaching her during that period.
Then the messages stopped.
The woman at the hotel could be Rose.
It could also be someone deliberately copying her appearance and movement.
Sarah searched Hawthorne’s patient archives.
One record was sealed under the name Rebecca Lane.
The woman’s age matched Rose.
The medical notes described a former domestic employee with knowledge of “family trust irregularities.”
The discharge status read:
TRANSFERRED TO DELANEY PRIVATE CARE.
Destination:
The mansion.
Daniel stared.
“My mother has been holding Emily’s mother inside the house?”
A hidden wing existed beneath the mansion’s old chapel. It did not appear on current plans, but Delaney Hospitality renovation invoices listed medical equipment and security doors delivered there.
Margaret’s Christmas dinner occurred directly above a private treatment floor.
Rose may have been under the same roof while her daughter was assaulted.
Sarah obtained a warrant.
Before police reached the mansion, the building’s fire alarm activated.
Smoke rose from the chapel wing.
Margaret called Daniel.
