Mansion sprinklers contained most of it before police arrived.
Margaret stood outside in a fur-lined coat, watching firefighters enter the chapel.
She claimed an electrical fault caused the blaze.
The timing made that explanation impossible to accept.
Sarah served the warrant.
Margaret’s attorney objected until firefighters reported a locked door behind the altar.
The basement contained four rooms.
One was empty.
One held medical supplies.
One contained surveillance equipment connected to Hawthorne.
The fourth held a narrow bed, a small table, and photographs of Emily from childhood through adulthood.
A woman had lived there recently.
She was gone.
On the table lay a silver comb matching the craftsmanship of Emily’s hairpin.
Inside its carved handle was another memory card.
Emily recognized her mother’s handwriting on a folded note.
If Emily finds this, Margaret has failed to erase me.
The card contained Rose’s recordings.
In the first, Rose explained that she discovered Margaret and Paul using child-welfare complaints to seize control of family trusts.
She hid evidence inside the hairpin.
When Margaret learned she was collecting files, Dr. Porter declared Rose mentally incompetent.
Rose was moved through Hawthorne and eventually confined beneath the mansion.
“Why didn’t she escape?” Emily asked.
The next recording answered.
Margaret threatened Daniel.
At the time, Daniel had just proposed to Emily. Margaret told Rose that exposing the network would lead to Daniel being charged with financial crimes Mark had committed using his identity.
Rose remained silent to protect her daughter’s future.
Another sacrifice made without Emily’s consent.
Rose’s final recording was dated three days earlier.
She looked older but alert.
“Vanessa found the chapel room. She promised to help me leave after Christmas. I no longer know whether she means it.”
Vanessa had known Rose was alive.
That may have been why she hid the folder behind her clothes.
Not only as leverage.
As part of an escape plan.
The footage showed Vanessa bringing food, a winter coat, and the duplicate memory card.
Rose planned to leave during the dinner while the family remained occupied.
Then Mark discovered the plan.
The final seconds showed him entering the room.
The recording stopped.
Sarah questioned Margaret.
“Where is Rose Carter?”
“I do not know.”
“You controlled this basement.”
“I provided private care for a disturbed former employee.”
“She was legally dead.”
“She requested privacy.”
Emily stepped toward her.
“You let me bury an empty coffin.”
Margaret looked at her with cold patience.
“Your mother wanted to destroy Daniel’s inheritance.”
“You imprisoned her.”
“I prevented her obsessions from destroying everyone.”
Margaret used the language of protection exactly as Paul and Dr. Porter did.
Mark had disappeared from Hawthorne during the police transfer.
Vanessa claimed he carried Rose’s memory card copy and the passport packet.
His phone signal moved toward the airport.
Sarah issued an alert.
Before they left the mansion, firefighters found a hidden elevator behind the chapel wall.
It led to an underground garage.
A black SUV had departed minutes before police arrived.
Garage footage showed Mark driving.
Rose sat in the passenger seat.
She did not appear restrained.
Vanessa was in the back.
The three left together.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Vanessa said Mark attacked her.”
“She may still be under threat,” Emily said.
“Or she may have chosen him again.”
A final camera angle showed Rose turning toward Vanessa.
She handed her the original memory card.
Vanessa placed it inside her coat.
Then Rose looked directly toward the garage camera and raised two fingers.
Anna recognized the signal.
It was the code Rose used years earlier to indicate a recording was being made under coercion.
The SUV’s route led toward Delaney International Airport.
Mark’s private aircraft prepared for departure.
Passenger manifest:
Mark.
Vanessa.
Rose.
Sophie.
Four women tied to Margaret’s system were being moved together.
The fifth listed passenger was Lily.
Lily remained safely at the hotel.
