Paul continued knocking.

Silence.
Then Paul stepped away from the peephole.
A hotel employee called the room.
“Sir, there are two police officers with the child-services director.”
Rachel arrived through the rear entrance with Detective Sarah Mills.
The uniformed officers were real.
They had been told Daniel was armed, unstable, and holding Lily against a court order.
No order existed.
Paul produced a digital document on his tablet.
Sarah examined the file number.
It belonged to an unrelated case involving another family.
Paul had changed the names on the visible page while leaving the original internal identifier.
The officers lowered their hands.
Sarah took Paul’s tablet.
“You are done accessing this family.”
Paul smiled.
“You do not have jurisdiction over child-welfare decisions.”
“I have jurisdiction over forged government records.”
Paul’s confidence wavered.
He claimed an administrative mistake.
Then Lily appeared behind Daniel.
“That’s the man from Grandma’s house.”
Every adult looked at her.
“When did you see him?”
“Before dinner. He was upstairs with Aunt Vanessa.”
Paul denied entering the mansion.
The security log showed his car passing through the gate at 4:12 p.m.
He left twenty minutes before Daniel and Emily arrived.
Rachel asked what he placed behind Vanessa’s clothes.
Paul requested an attorney.
Sarah preserved his phone and detained him for questioning, though no final charge was shown.
Before officers escorted him away, he looked at Emily.
“Ask your husband why Margaret chose Christmas.”
Daniel stared back.
Paul smiled.
“She needed every blood relative in one room.”
At the mansion, eighteen relatives witnessed the assault.
Their presence had seemed like cruelty amplified by an audience.

Rachel reviewed the Delaney family trust.
A rarely used clause allowed emergency transfer of company control when a majority of adult blood relatives certified that one shareholder threatened family assets or endangered a minor beneficiary.

After Emily reacted to Vanessa’s insult, Margaret intended to claim Daniel became violent, removed confidential documents, and fled with Lily.
The relatives would sign a prepared certification.
“Did they?” Daniel asked.
Rachel checked the corporate registry.
A transfer attempt had been filed at 1:06 a.m.
Fourteen relatives signed.

“They watched Margaret hit me, then signed this?”

The burner phone contained audio from the dining room after Daniel left.
Margaret told the relatives Emily attacked first.

A second relative, Thomas Delaney, walked out.
The third, Daniel’s cousin Grace, secretly photographed every signed page.
Grace contacted Rachel that morning.

Vanessa slipped it into Grace’s coat before Mark dragged her upstairs.
The device contained a location-sharing application.
Vanessa’s signal was moving.

Grace sent the coordinates.
