Chapter 2

Julian Thorne built his reputation on perfection.

Perfect suits.

Perfect speeches.

Perfect charity photographs beside incubators and grateful families.

He was the public face of Thorne Maternal Institute, the private Chicago hospital where wealthy mothers delivered babies in suites with marble bathrooms, private chefs, and nurses trained to speak softly enough that pain sounded optional.

To donors, Julian was visionary.

To board members, he was profitable.

To staff, he was feared.

To Chloe, he was her husband.

That used to mean something.

When they met, Julian had not yet become the man whose name appeared on hospital wings and fundraising banners. He was ambitious, yes, but charming. He listened to Chloe like she was rare. He admired her work with neonatal charities. He told her she had a calming presence.

Later, he called that same calm “weakness.”

He disliked when she asked questions about hospital finances.

Disliked when she befriended nurses.

Disliked when she refused to smile beside him after private cruelty.

By the time Chloe became pregnant, Julian had turned marriage into a controlled wing of his empire.

Appointments were scheduled through his office.

Staff updates reached him before they reached her.

Her phone was checked under the excuse of “security.”

Her mother, Eleanor, was kept at a distance with polished lies.

“Chloe needs rest.”

“Chloe is emotional.”

“Chloe asked for privacy.”

Eleanor believed none of it.

She knew her daughter’s voice.

And over the last month, Chloe’s voice had changed.

It had become smaller.

Careful.

Timed around Julian’s presence.

Then, one night, Eleanor received a message from Chloe’s old phone account.

Only four words.

Mom, save everything now.

By morning, Eleanor was in Chicago.

By afternoon, the hospital cameras on Chloe’s floor had gone dark.

By evening, Chloe was on a gurney, Julian was shouting orders, and the lie had finally become too visible for anyone to obey.
