Chapter 9

Julian tried charm next.

It arrived late and poorly.

He lowered his voice.

“Chloe, sweetheart. You’re frightened. This is a misunderstanding.”

Chloe’s face went pale.

Eleanor’s hand tightened gently over hers.

Marcus stepped slightly, blocking Julian’s line of sight.

“Speak to the officers,” Marcus said.

Julian ignored him.

“Chloe, tell them you’re confused.”

Chloe closed her eyes.

That was the old script.

Tell them you misunderstood.

Tell them you fell.

Tell them pregnancy made you emotional.

Tell them your mother is dramatic.

Tell them your husband knows best.

For years, Julian had not needed to hit every door himself.

He only needed Chloe to open them from inside.

But this time, Chloe opened her eyes and looked at him from the gurney.

“No.”

The word was small.

Hospital machines were louder.

Footsteps were louder.

The elevator hum was louder.

But the word reached everyone.

Julian’s face hardened.

Then he remembered the officers and softened it too late.

Eleanor lifted the folder slightly.

“Careful, Julian.”

His eyes moved to it.

“What is in that?”

Eleanor’s expression did not change.

“Enough to know what is missing.”

That sentence terrified him more than a full reveal.

Because missing things leave outlines.

Dark cameras.

Deleted intervals.

Altered logs.

Elevator records.

Gurney movement requests.

Staff pages.

Gaps that proved someone had tried to create darkness at exactly the wrong time.

Julian looked at the ceiling camera in the corridor.

Its red indicator light was on.
