Chapter 7

The phone in Eleanor’s hand was not the full evidence.
That was why Julian was afraid.
Not because he saw everything.
Because he could not see enough.
Men like him feared incomplete knowledge more than direct accusation.
Direct accusation can be denied.
Incomplete knowledge means the next sentence might contain the thing you missed.
Eleanor held the phone with the screen angled just enough for him to recognize the security interface.
No readable text.
No full footage.
Only the shape of a system he thought he had controlled.
Julian’s eyes flicked to it.
Then to the folder.
Then to the nurses.
His mind began moving.
Who had access?
Which cameras?
What backups?
Which staff member spoke?
Which timestamp remained?
Which file had he failed to erase?
Marcus saw the panic building beneath Julian’s polished face.
Good, he thought.
Let him calculate from the outside now.
Chloe tried to sit slightly, wincing.
Marcus turned immediately.
“Don’t move. We’ve got you.”
Chloe’s eyes found his.
For a moment, shame crossed her face.
Marcus hated that most.
The way injured people apologize with their eyes before they ask for help.
“You did the right thing,” he said quietly.
Julian snapped, “Do not coach my wife.”
Marcus looked at him.
“She is speaking for herself.”
Chloe swallowed.
Then did exactly that.
“I don’t want him near me.”
The corridor went silent again.
One officer stepped closer to Julian.
Not arresting him.
Not touching him.
Simply changing the space.
Julian felt it.
His control had always depended on proximity.
Standing close.
Lowering his voice.
Owning the next instruction.

Now every inch between him and Chloe was being filled by people who no longer looked to him first.
