Chapter 3

Dr. Marcus Hale noticed the bruises before anyone told him to look.

That was why Julian hated him.

Marcus was an obstetrician, not a politician. He delivered babies, argued with administrators, and refused to treat hospital hierarchy like medical science.

When Chloe was brought into the corridor, Marcus had been coming out of a consultation room.

He saw the gurney.

Saw the bandages.

Saw the nurses avoiding Julian’s eyes.

Saw Chloe’s hand resting protectively over her stomach.

Julian was walking too close to the gurney, speaking too sharply.

“She goes upstairs,” he ordered. “Private suite. No intake record until I approve it.”

Marcus stepped in.

“She needs evaluation here.”

Julian smiled without warmth.

“She is my wife.”

“She is my patient.”

That sentence changed everything.

Julian turned toward him slowly.

“You work in my hospital, Dr. Hale.”

Marcus looked at Chloe.

Her eyes were open just enough for him to see terror.

Not pain alone.

Terror.

“Chloe,” Marcus said gently, “do you feel safe with him making decisions right now?”

Julian snapped, “Do not ask her that.”

Chloe’s lips moved.

No sound came.

Julian leaned closer to her.

Marcus saw it then.

The warning in his posture.

The way Chloe’s entire body stiffened.

The way one nurse looked like she might cry.

Marcus moved before thought finished forming.

Julian reached toward the gurney.

Marcus struck him once.

Not as a doctor.

As a human being who had seen enough.

Then he immediately stepped back, raised his open hand, and placed himself between Julian and Chloe.

The police officers were already moving down the corridor.

But Marcus knew the most important thing had happened before they arrived.

For the first time that day, someone had stood closer to Chloe than Julian did.
