Chapter 8

The nurses became the first visible sign of collapse.
Not the police.
Not Marcus.
The nurses.
For years, Julian had treated nursing staff as extensions of hospital efficiency. He praised them in public and overrode them in private. He called them “the heart of the hospital” at fundraisers, then cut their staffing requests behind closed doors.
They knew his voice.
They knew when he expected obedience.
They also knew Chloe.
They had seen her arrive for appointments with sleeves too long for the weather.
Seen her flinch when Julian entered exam rooms.
Seen him answer questions meant for her.
Seen charts revised too cleanly.
Seen security outages described as maintenance.
Now, one nurse placed herself near Chloe’s IV line.
The other moved to the opposite side of the gurney, checking fetal monitoring equipment with shaking but capable hands.
They did not ask Julian’s permission.
He noticed.
“Nurse Patel,” he said sharply.
She did not look at him.
She looked at Marcus.
“Vitals stable for transport to protected assessment room if Dr. Hale approves.”
Julian’s face darkened.
“I said upstairs.”
Marcus answered, “She is not being moved to a private executive suite.”
The officer beside Julian lifted his chin.
“Director Thorne, please remain where you are.”
Director Thorne.
Not Dr. Thorne.
Not sir.
A title suddenly stripped of power.
Eleanor watched Chloe’s monitor, one hand still covering her daughter’s fingers.
The steady beeping filled the corridor.
To Chloe, it sounded like proof she was still here.
Still breathing.
Still carrying her baby.
Still alive after Julian had made survival sound negotiable.
Julian looked down the corridor toward the security desk.

No one there moved to help him.
