Chapter 15 - OWEN’S NICU

Owen spent twenty-seven days in NICU.

Respiratory support first.

Then feeding.

Weight.

Temperature.

Waiting.

My body healed badly and slowly.

C-section incision.

Bruising.

Back pain.

Numb toes from prolonged compression in the trench that gradually improved.

Nightmares.

Milk pumping every three hours.

Police interviews between NICU rounds felt obscene.

Megan stayed.

Ben visited once.

Brought no flowers.

Thank God.

He said:

“I should’ve opened the gate sooner.”

“No.”

“I heard you.”

“You opened it.”

“Eventually.”

I looked at him.
