Chapter 26 - THE GARDEN AGAIN

Two years later, I returned to the old house for the final sale inspection.

I had moved.

The house sat empty.

Tomato beds gone wild.

Blue flowerpot still beside the patio.

Cracked from frost.

The trench had long been filled.

Grass grew over it unevenly.

Ben stood at the gate.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want me to leave?”

“No.”

Good question.

I walked to the blue pot.

Inside:

Dirt.

Dead leaves.

Nothing else.

I had imagined destroying it.

Instead I left it.

The buyer could throw it away.

Objects do not deserve ceremonies simply because terrible things happened near them.

Before leaving, I turned the hose splitter off.

It had been replaced.

New metal.

Easy lever.

I touched it once.

Then walked out through the open gate.
