Chapter 13 - THE ORCHID TEA

Catherine survived.
Doctors found a sedative and a cardiac medication in the tea, but she drank only a small amount before collapsing. The package carried no fingerprints.
The enclosed card read:
Eleanor warned you that pursuit has consequences.
Julian sat beside Catherine’s hospital bed, devastated.
Maya visited only after Catherine regained consciousness and requested her.
“I told him to stop searching thirty years ago,” Catherine said weakly. “He believed stopping meant abandoning Eleanor.”
Maya looked toward Julian.
“And now?”
“Now I understand that searching without listening can become another form of taking control.”
The admission did not repair everything.
It changed what might happen next.
Malcolm contacted Julian through an encrypted message and offered a trade.
The second ledger for the antidote to a supposedly delayed toxin inside Catherine.
Doctors found no evidence of any delayed compound. Malcolm was bluffing.
He wanted the ledger because it named remaining allies and hidden accounts.
Federal agents prepared another controlled exchange.
This time, Carol insisted on helping identify Malcolm’s communication methods. Vanessa provided his preferred code phrases. Olivia described the cars and safe properties he used decades earlier.
The women he had manipulated began closing his options.
Investigators traced the orchid-tea packaging to a floral laboratory owned by the foundation. Security footage showed Malcolm’s driver collecting supplies.
The driver was arrested and revealed Malcolm’s location: an abandoned propagation facility beneath the original Vale greenhouse.
Agents entered through underground service tunnels.
They found financial servers, forged identities, recorded threats, and copies of the edited birthday videos.
Malcolm was gone.
A timer on the server began deleting files.
Julian wanted technicians to preserve everything.
Maya noticed an old irrigation valve labeled BLUE.
She remembered her mother’s warning about the blue greenhouse ledger.
The valve opened a hidden compartment containing a mechanical backup of the foundation accounts.
Eleanor had created it decades earlier.
Malcolm never found it.
The backup preserved original transfers and personal authorizations.
It proved Malcolm ordered the surveillance around Eleanor’s car before the fatal crash.
It also showed Olivia’s husband tampered with the brakes.
Olivia had not known the full truth.
When investigators told her, she stopped speaking for several minutes.
David had claimed Eleanor’s car merely needed tracking.
He had participated in her death.
Malcolm kept that secret to control Olivia for the rest of her life.
The evidence strengthened the homicide case.
It also contained one unexpected authorization.
Julian signed a payment to David the week before the crash.
Julian stared at the record.
“I paid him to locate Eleanor.”
Malcolm routed the payment into the vehicle operation.
Julian’s search money helped finance the act that killed his sister.
He had not known.
The result remained unbearable.
Maya watched him confront the consequence without retreating into excuses.
“I gave Malcolm the means,” he said. “I have to live with that.”
Before agents left the underground facility, a hidden speaker activated.
Malcolm’s voice filled the room.
“You all prefer guilt to responsibility. Guilt asks nothing but suffering. Responsibility requires surrender.”
A steel door closed behind the team.
Gas began entering through the vents.
Agents fitted masks and forced the emergency exit.
The gas was harmless theatrical smoke.
Malcolm had delayed them long enough to escape through another tunnel.
Outside, Maya’s phone received a photograph.
Lily’s new apartment building.
Taken that morning.
Beneath it, Malcolm wrote:

You cannot guard every birthday.
👉 Malcolm had lost his money, allies, and records, but he was still close enough to watch Lily.
