Chapter 17 - CUSTODIAN EIGHTEEN

Catherine requested an attorney before speaking.

She did not leave.

She sat at Maya’s dining table while federal technicians removed the hidden camera from Lily’s toy and searched every electrical outlet, smoke detector and air vent.

Julian stood near the kitchen door.

“You let me believe Eleanor was dead.”

Catherine looked at him.

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Thirteen years.”

Julian gripped the back of a chair.

“You watched me search for her.”

“I watched your searches expose every place she tried to hide.”

“I was her brother.”

“You believed being her brother entitled you to ignore her instructions.”

The answer echoed Carol’s earlier warning.

Julian’s anger did not disappear.

Neither did the truth inside Catherine’s words.

Maya placed the third orchid ring on the table.

“Is this yours?”

Catherine nodded.

“Eleanor commissioned it after Julian brought the blue ledger to Malcolm.”

Julian closed his eyes.

The third ring had not existed when their mother ordered the original pair. Eleanor created it later for an independent custodian who belonged neither to the Vale bloodline nor Malcolm’s legal office.

Catherine had been a junior financial auditor assigned to the foundation.

She discovered that licensing income was being routed through David Cross’s insurance companies before Malcolm transferred portions into offshore accounts.

Eleanor trusted her because Catherine had no family connection at the time.

Then Catherine met Julian.

“What number does eighteen mean?” Maya asked.

“Eighteen months.”

Under the secret amendment, the independent custodian received temporary authority if Eleanor disappeared and Julian failed to expose the theft within eighteen months.

Catherine activated the role.

She froze several accounts.

Malcolm discovered the action before she could freeze the entire foundation.

“He threatened you?” Maya asked.

“He threatened Eleanor.”

Catherine helped create Ellen Hart’s identity and moved Eleanor through three states. Years later, she married Julian without revealing that she remained in contact with his sister.

Julian laughed bitterly.

“Was our marriage part of the assignment?”

“No.”

“Did Eleanor approve it?”

“She told me not to marry you.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed I would eventually choose your safety over her instructions.”

“Did you?”

Catherine looked down.

“Yes.”

Thirteen years earlier, Julian’s illegal investigator located Eleanor and young Maya. Catherine learned Malcolm’s people were following him.

Instead of warning Eleanor directly, Catherine tried to redirect Julian first.

The delay allowed Malcolm to identify the town.

Eleanor escaped with Maya, but the move placed them on an isolated winter road.

Their car crashed months later.

The official record declared Ellen Hart dead.

Catherine believed it.

Until a postcard arrived three years afterward with one line in Eleanor’s handwriting:

The third orchid remains closed.

“You knew she survived,” Julian said.

“Yes.”

“And said nothing.”

“Yes.”

Catherine did not call secrecy protection.

She described exactly what she had chosen.

“I feared that telling you would restart the search. I also feared losing you when you learned what I had done.”

Maya opened the ring.

The photographic film had been removed, but a narrow groove remained beneath the green stone.

Catherine inserted a tiny metal pin from her necklace.

A second compartment opened.

Inside was a transparent data strip containing three signatures.

Eleanor Vale.

Catherine Cross.

David Cross.

The hidden amendment did not give Catherine full control.

It created a three-person deadlock.

Eleanor represented the missing heir.

Catherine represented independent oversight.

David represented paternal continuity if Eleanor produced a child.

“Why would my mother give David authority?” Maya asked.

“She didn’t,” Catherine said. “His signature was added later.”

“By Malcolm?”

“No. By your grandfather.”

Thomas Vale knew David had been involved with Eleanor. He believed a father would protect any future child if Eleanor remained hidden.

David transformed that protection into ownership.

The hidden trust had accumulated undeclared pharmaceutical royalties for thirty years.

Not eighty million dollars.

More than one billion.

The money remained inside a structure called Orchid Continuity Holdings.

David needed two conditions before accessing it:

Confirmation that Eleanor’s biological daughter lived.

Evidence that the daughter could not safely manage the inheritance.

Richard’s birthday assault, Vanessa’s video and the false medical records were designed to create the second condition.

Maya’s successful resistance had blocked him.

Now Eleanor’s return created a new opportunity.

David could claim Eleanor voluntarily abandoned the trust, concealed Maya and exposed Lily to years of danger.

He had filed for emergency paternal management.

“He doesn’t need me declared incapable,” Maya said.

Catherine nodded.

“He needs the court to believe Eleanor’s decisions contaminated your claim.”

A hearing was scheduled in forty-eight hours.

David would have to appear or provide verified live testimony.

Maya looked toward Detective Brooks.

“Then we let him.”

Catherine reached for the ring.

Maya pulled it away.

“You do not control what happens next.”

“I can help.”

“You can provide information. That is different.”

Catherine accepted the boundary.

A technician entered carrying the camera removed from Lily’s toy.

The device’s transmission records showed one outgoing connection.

Not David.

Not Malcolm.

The signal had gone to the secure medical floor where Catherine recovered from the poisoned orchid tea.

Someone had installed the camera while Catherine was unconscious.

Hospital access logs identified the visitor.

Eleanor Vale.

Maya turned toward the window where her mother had stood.

Eleanor had not merely discovered the surveillance.

May you like

She had placed it.

👉 Catherine revealed the hidden billion-dollar trust, but evidence from Lily’s toy showed Eleanor herself had installed the camera that watched Maya’s family.
