Chapter 20 - GLASSHOUSE EIGHTEEN

Glasshouse Eighteen was built beneath a pharmaceutical research farm.
From the road, the property appeared to contain rows of ordinary climate-controlled warehouses. Satellite images showed no orchids.
Underground thermal scans revealed a conservatory larger than the original Vale greenhouse.
Thousands of rare plants grew beneath artificial sunlight.
Each variety corresponded to a patent held outside the public foundation.
The hidden royalties had created Orchid Continuity Holdings.
The billion-dollar fortune was not sitting inside one bank.
It existed across medicine, agriculture, genetics and licensing contracts concealed beneath different orchid names.
David had spent thirty years turning Thomas Vale’s plants into a private empire.
Detective Brooks’s team entered through a drainage canal while state police surrounded the property.
Catherine remained visible through the greenhouse control feed. Her eyes were open now.
Celeste held her hand against the scanner.
“Confirm the surrender,” she ordered.
Catherine’s voice shook.
“No.”
Celeste tightened the ring around the scar.
Pain changed Catherine’s pulse, causing another failed verification.
“You created this role to stop men like Malcolm,” Celeste said. “Then you married the family and protected Julian.”
“I failed Eleanor.”
“Yes.”
“That does not mean I surrender Maya to you.”
Celeste leaned closer.
“You already surrendered her when you stayed silent.”
Catherine closed her eyes.
The accusation was true.
The conclusion was not.
A person’s past failure did not require obedience to the next abuser.
“No,” she repeated.
David appeared behind the glass.
Maya saw him through the courthouse connection.
He was in his late sixties, broad-shouldered, with gray hair and the same pale green eyes Maya saw in her own reflection.
Olivia stood beside him with her hands bound.
David had removed her from protective housing too.
“You testified against your husband’s estate,” he told her. “Now correct the record.”
Olivia looked toward the camera.
“David Cross is alive.”
The statement satisfied the first element of his restoration petition.
He needed Olivia to confirm their marriage had remained legally active.
Then he could claim authority over companies held inside his estate.
“Tell them I protected Eleanor,” David ordered.
Olivia laughed.
“You paid Malcolm to hunt her.”
“I prevented him from killing her.”
“You financed the danger and then sold survival.”
David struck her.
Maya’s attorney asked the judge to terminate the hearing.
The judge refused while physical verification remained possible.
The law wanted complete certainty.
David used the delay.
Detective Brooks reached the underground conservatory with eight minutes remaining.
Celeste activated the greenhouse fire system.
Steel doors sealed.
A gas designed to remove oxygen without damaging valuable plants began entering the lower level.
Catherine and Olivia would lose consciousness within minutes.
The orchids would survive.
Julian entered the control corridor behind Brooks.
David’s voice came through the speakers.
“You can open the room containing your wife or the room containing Olivia.”
Two manual switches appeared.
One door.
One person.
The system allowed only a single emergency release before locking permanently.
Julian looked at the controls.
Years earlier, he had selected Malcolm over Eleanor when he took the blue ledger to the man she accused.
David expected him to choose again.
Catherine over Olivia.
Family over witness.
Julian stepped away from both switches.
“Cut the irrigation.”
The greenhouse engineer stared at him.
“The plants will be destroyed.”
“The roots share a water-pressure system. Drain it.”
The engineer opened every irrigation valve simultaneously.
Pressure collapsed beneath the glass rooms.
The emergency seals depended on hydraulic locks.
Both doors released.
Brooks’s team pulled Catherine and Olivia into the corridor.
Julian had not chosen one woman.
He had destroyed the structure demanding the choice.
Water flooded the conservatory.
Rare orchids bent beneath the artificial rain.
David ran toward the archive vault.
Maya watched from the courtroom as officers pursued him.
Celeste reached the server first.
She initiated deletion of every hidden patent record.
Catherine pressed her scar against the original terminal while fully conscious.
The system asked:
PRESERVE CONTINUITY HOLDINGS?
She selected no.
The hidden authority dissolved.
Every contract transferred into court-supervised evidence.
David’s trust petition collapsed.
He stopped beside the archive door.
For the first time, he looked directly into the camera carrying Maya’s image.
“I gave your mother thirty years of life.”
Maya answered from the courtroom.
“You gave her thirty years of hiding from you.”
“She kept you alive because I allowed it.”
“My life is not proof of your mercy.”
Police forced David to the floor.
Celeste attempted to escape through the flooded irrigation tunnel. Olivia blocked the access ladder until officers reached her.
Both father and daughter were arrested.
The judge formally denied David’s restoration petition.
But when the full asset report opened, the courtroom became silent.
Orchid Continuity Holdings was valued at 1.4 billion dollars.
More than half the patents depended upon medical research conducted on undocumented patients overseas.

Maya had won legal control of a fortune built partly from stolen data.
👉 David and Celeste were captured, but Maya inherited a billion-dollar empire whose most valuable patents had been created through hidden human experiments.
