Chapter 5 - THE BLUE LEDGER
Julian did not deny knowing the ledger.
When Maya showed him the note the following morning, he looked older.
“The blue ledger documented foundation licensing payments,” he said.
“What happened to it?”
“It disappeared with Eleanor.”
“My mother believed you had it.”
“She was wrong.”
“Or you lied.”
Julian accepted the accusation without anger.
Thirty years earlier, Eleanor discovered several pharmaceutical companies paying licensing fees through shell corporations. The foundation reported only part of the income.
She believed Malcolm Vane diverted millions.
Julian initially dismissed her concerns because Malcolm had managed the family finances since their father’s death.
Then Eleanor brought him the blue ledger.
It contained handwritten comparisons between real payments and official reports.
“What did you do?” Maya asked.
“I told her I needed time.”
“To protect her?”
“To verify it.”
“And while you waited?”
“She vanished.”
Julian admitted taking the ledger to Malcolm.
He believed confrontation would force an explanation.
Instead, Malcolm called Eleanor unstable and claimed she fabricated numbers because she resented Julian’s authority.
The next morning, Eleanor disappeared.
The ledger vanished from Julian’s office.
“You gave the evidence to the man she accused.”
“Yes.”
Maya stood.
“Then she was right not to trust you.”
Julian did not stop her.
The DNA result arrived that afternoon.
There was a 99.98 percent probability that Julian was Maya’s maternal uncle.
Eleanor Vale had lived.
She had raised Maya as Ellen Hart.
She had died without reclaiming her identity.
The Vale trust immediately froze its approaching transfer deadline. Malcolm Vane challenged the test and demanded a second laboratory.
Julian objected.
Maya’s new attorney, Dana Brooks, requested an independent court-supervised test and a complete accounting of the foundation.
Malcolm responded with an emergency petition alleging that Maya obtained the ring through theft and fabricated the family connection for money.
Attached was an affidavit from Olivia.
She claimed Eleanor never had a child.
Olivia also stated that Maya had known about the trust before marrying Richard and deliberately entered the family to manipulate witnesses connected to Eleanor.
The lie was audacious.
Maya had not heard the Vale name until the party.
Richard’s own messages proved that.
Police recovered a conversation between him and Olivia from six months earlier.

Olivia replied:

Richard had not married Maya because of the ring; they had already been married for five years when Olivia identified it. But once Olivia saw the necklace during Lily’s baptism, she began investigating.
She discovered Maya’s possible inheritance.
From that moment, the family shifted.
Richard insisted Maya stop working.
Olivia took control of Lily’s documents.
Vanessa began filming arguments.
The abuse intensified as the trust deadline approached.
Richard’s arrogance was not only personal.
He believed he had trapped an heiress who did not know she was wealthy.
If Maya inherited while married, he intended to claim influence over the assets or prove her incapable.
When police confronted him with the messages, Richard blamed Olivia.
“She said Maya would destroy us if she learned the truth.”
“What did Maya have the power to destroy?” Brooks asked.
Richard hesitated.
“My mother’s agreement with Malcolm.”
Olivia had received monthly payments from a foundation consulting account for twenty-nine years.
The payments ended if Eleanor or her descendant took control.
She had been paid to maintain the disappearance story.

But the latest transfer came from a new account opened only weeks earlier.
