Chapter 19 - THE VOICE OF CUSTODIAN EIGHTEEN

Catherine’s transport camera recorded eleven seconds.

A black utility vehicle blocked the road.

A woman in emergency-medical clothing approached the driver’s window and displayed federal credentials.

The body camera distorted when she raised a small device.

Then Catherine’s own voice said:

“Stand down. The route has changed.”

The real Catherine sat restrained inside the vehicle when the command played.

Her copied voice persuaded the officers before the sedative entered the ventilation system.

Celeste did not force every door.

She used trusted identities to open them.

Maya watched the footage with Julian.

He replayed Catherine’s face during the final second. She looked toward the camera and pressed her thumb against the ring finger of her left hand.

The orchid scar.

A signal.

“She knew they wanted her biometrics,” Julian said.

Catherine had previously told him the scar contained no electronic device.

But the original custodian procedure required a physical measure the trust could not obtain from photographs.

Pulse response beneath scar tissue.

The hidden amendment recognized the rhythm produced when a ring pressed against the old branded mark.

Celeste could copy Catherine’s face, voice and fingerprint.

She could not duplicate living scar tissue.

Unless she had Catherine physically present during the hearing.

Maya’s attorney requested postponement.

The court refused.

The trust had already remained sealed for thirty years. The emergency petition alleged continued delay allowed assets to be stolen.

David’s legal team offered one condition.

They would bring Custodian Eighteen to a neutral verification site one hour before the hearing.

Detective Brooks called it a trap.

Maya agreed.

“They need us to approach the location they selected.”

“What do you suggest?”

“Let them believe the verification matters.”

Maya no longer controlled events by simply refusing to participate. Sometimes refusal left another person in danger.

But she would not accept the options David prepared.

The third ring’s data strip contained more than signatures. Federal technicians discovered a geographic code inside the film perforations.

It led to the original Vale greenhouse.

Beneath the central irrigation bed stood a biometric terminal built during Catherine’s first eighteen months as custodian.

The terminal held the original trust authority.

Every modern verification system depended upon its archived data.

If investigators disconnected that authority before the hearing, Celeste could present Catherine all she wanted.

No transfer would complete.

Julian entered the greenhouse with Detective Brooks’s team.

Maya remained at the courthouse under protection with Lily.

The abandoned glass structure had been searched during Malcolm’s exchange, but no one examined the foundation beneath the wild orchids.

Agents removed the central irrigation controls.

A steel hatch appeared.

The terminal below remained active.

Beside it sat a locked medical chair.

Fresh restraints hung from both arms.

Catherine had been there.

A small bloodstain marked the orchid-shaped scanner.

Celeste had already collected the pulse response.

Julian struck the wall.

“We’re late.”

Detective Brooks examined the terminal.

The scan showed partial authentication.

Catherine’s body responded incorrectly because she was drugged.

The system requested a conscious verification.

Celeste still needed her awake.

A live video opened on the underground screen.

Catherine sat inside a glass room with an orchid ring pressed around her scar.

Celeste stood behind her.

She resembled David more than Eleanor had described—tall, controlled, with dark hair cut precisely at the jaw.

“Julian,” she said through Catherine’s voice.

Julian stepped toward the camera.

“Where is my wife?”

Celeste changed to her natural voice.

“Waiting to decide whether her loyalty belongs to you or the woman who recruited her.”

“She already made that mistake once.”

Catherine lifted her head.

“She’s at Glasshouse Eighteen,” she said.

Celeste struck the mute control.

But Catherine had revealed enough.

Vale records listed seventeen public greenhouses.

Glasshouse Eighteen did not appear on foundation property maps.

Carol’s second ledger contained a single recurring payment to a climate-control company in northern Connecticut.

Federal agents traced it to a private pharmaceutical conservatory.

Before Brooks could issue the raid order, the courthouse clerk announced the hearing had moved forward.

A woman had appeared remotely as Catherine Cross and surrendered the independent custodian role.

The judge accepted her identity.

Maya’s attorney objected.

The clerk looked at the filing.

The trust transfer was already processing.

Catherine’s copied voice had spoken one sentence:

I choose family continuity over Eleanor’s descendant.

Maya stood.

“Play it again.”

The recording filled the courtroom.

Everyone heard Catherine’s voice.

Then Maya noticed one word.

Catherine never called her “Eleanor’s descendant.”

She called her Maya.

The phrase came from David’s original trust documents.

Maya addressed the judge.

“That voice belongs to Catherine. The decision does not.”

The judge suspended the transfer for twenty minutes pending physical verification.

Detective Brooks had twenty minutes to reach Glasshouse Eighteen.

👉 Celeste copied Catherine’s body and voice well enough to begin the billion-dollar transfer, leaving investigators only twenty minutes to find the real trustee alive.
