Chapter 2

The accident had happened twenty minutes earlier.

Megan had been carrying one of the blue coolers from the SUV to the barbecue area because Daniel had asked everyone else to “relax and enjoy the day.”

Everyone else meant his relatives.

His daughter.

His mother’s old friends.

His cousins and their spouses.

Never Megan.

She had spent the afternoon setting out plates, checking on the grill, carrying drinks, slicing fruit, and smiling every time someone called her “sweet” in the tone people used for unpaid staff.

Ava had been standing near the patio steps, scrolling her phone with a bored expression.

When Megan passed, one of the cooler handles slipped.

The lid hit the stone.

Ice slid out.

A bottle rolled beneath Ava’s shoe.

Ava stumbled backward and dropped her phone into a bowl of salad dressing.

Megan caught her arm before she fell.

It was messy.

Embarrassing.

Annoying.

But no one was hurt.

Megan apologized immediately.

Ava stared at her ruined phone, then at the relatives watching, and something sharp entered her face.

“She did it on purpose,” Ava said.

Megan blinked.

“What?”

Ava’s voice shook, but her eyes were dry then.

“She hates that Dad brought me here. She said I’m spoiled and not really hers.”

The patio went silent.

Megan felt the accusation pass through the family like a cold wind.

Daniel came from the grill, wiping his hands on a towel.

“What did you say to my daughter?”

“I didn’t say that.”

Ava began crying then.

Perfectly timed.

Loud enough for everyone.

Daniel did not ask another question.

That was what broke Megan.

Not the lie.

His certainty.

He looked at his wife of six years and believed the worst version of her before she finished a sentence.

Megan apologized again for the spill.

For the phone.

For the accident.

But Ava kept sobbing, Daniel kept hardening, and the relatives kept standing there with the quiet hunger of people watching a marriage become entertainment.

Then Daniel said, “Get your things.”

Megan stared at him.

“You’re serious?”

He pointed toward the SUV.

“Apologize to Ava right now—or leave my family.”

My family.

Not our family.

That told Megan everything.

So she walked to the SUV.

Not to leave first.
