Chapter 6

Megan did not enjoy Ava’s fear.

That surprised her less than it might have surprised Daniel.

For years, he had treated compassion as weakness, especially when Megan extended it to his daughter after being wounded by her.

“You let her get away with too much,” Daniel would say.

Then he would turn around and believe Ava’s accusations whenever it suited him.

He did not protect Ava from consequences.

He used her emotions as a weapon against Megan and called that fatherhood.

Now Ava stood beside him, looking suddenly younger than sixteen.

The pink shirt, the white skirt, the high ponytail, the tear tracks on her cheeks—all of it made her look like a child who had thrown a match and discovered the house was full of gas.

Megan’s voice softened.

“Ava, I know you were embarrassed. I know the phone mattered to you. But you lied.”

Ava swallowed.

“I thought…”

Daniel turned sharply.

“Ava.”

The warning in his voice landed before her sentence finished.

Ava went silent.

Megan’s eyes moved to Daniel.

“That. Right there.”

He glared at her.

“What?”

“You don’t comfort her. You direct her.”

A relative whispered something near the patio.

Daniel heard and snapped, “Everyone back up.”

No one moved.

Not fully.

That was new.

His relatives had obeyed him all afternoon, but the envelope had weakened the command.

Megan held the folder against her chest again.

Daniel looked at the sealed envelope in his hand.

“What is this supposed to be?”

“You know enough.”

“No, I don’t.”

“You recognized the folder before I opened it.”

His face tightened.

Ava looked at him.

“Dad?”

He shoved the envelope slightly away from himself but did not drop it.

Megan noticed.

He feared it, but he would not let it leave his hand.

That meant it mattered.

Good.

She stepped toward the SUV.

Daniel followed half a step.

“Where are you going?”

She stopped at the open hatch.

“Home.”

His face changed.

“You are not going to that house before we talk.”

Megan looked at him with terrible calm.

“You told me to leave.”

“I didn’t mean—”

“Yes,” she said. “You did.”

The words shut him up.

She removed the bracelet from her wrist.

Ava stared as Megan placed it beside the suitcase.

Not thrown.

Not dramatic.

Laid down with care.
