Chapter 9

Daniel tried to recover with dignity.

He straightened his polo shirt, adjusted his stance, and lowered his voice as if the whole confrontation had become a negotiation.

“Megan, we’re leaving together.”

“No.”

“You are my wife.”

Her eyes dropped briefly to the SUV trunk where the bracelet now lay beyond sight.

“Not in the way that word should mean.”

The relatives looked away.

Ava wiped her cheeks.

Daniel’s anger sharpened again.

“You think a folder changes a marriage?”

“No,” Megan said. “I think a marriage changed when you drafted papers behind my back.”

His face drained.

The sentence revealed nothing complete.

No details.

No signatures.

No outcome.

But it told enough.

Ava looked horrified.

“Papers?”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“She doesn’t know what she found.”

Megan lifted the folder slightly.

“I know who prepared them. I know when. I know which room you used. And I know what you planned to say after I was gone.”

One cousin muttered, “Jesus.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the envelope.

Megan looked at it.

“Careful. You’re wrinkling your answer.”

He stared at her with something close to hatred now.

Not because she had lied.

Because she had stopped helping him hide.

Ava stepped back another inch.

Daniel noticed again.

“Ava.”

She shook her head.

“What did you do to the house?”

The question came out small.

Megan’s eyes softened, but she did not answer for him.

Daniel looked toward the lake, then the lodge, searching for a version that could survive both daughter and witnesses.

“There were financial arrangements.”

Megan laughed softly.

Not amused.

Broken.

“Financial arrangements. That’s what you call trying to take a woman’s home while telling her to leave your family?”

The relatives inhaled.

Ava’s tears spilled again.

Daniel stepped toward Megan.

She did not move.

“Don’t say another word.”

Megan looked directly at him.

“Or what?”

He stopped.

The question hung between them.

For years, Daniel’s threats had been implied. Tone. Silence. Withdrawal. Custody guilt through Ava. Money language. Family pressure.

Here, in sunlight, with an envelope against his chest, he had to say the threat plainly.

He could not.

Megan nodded once.

“That’s what I thought.”

She turned toward the driver’s door.

Daniel stood frozen.
