Chapter 8

After the hatch closed, nobody moved.
The black Toyota reflected the lake, the mountains, and Daniel’s stunned face in its tinted glass.
Megan kept the keys in her hand.
Not hidden.
Not surrendered.
Daniel looked at them.
“You’re not driving away with those documents.”
Megan’s eyes narrowed.
“With my documents?”
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
“I do.”
“You’re emotional.”
Megan smiled faintly.
There it was.
The word men used when a woman’s facts became inconvenient.
Emotional.
She gestured toward the envelope.
“You are the one holding paper like it might explode.”
Ava looked at his hand.
Daniel lowered it quickly.
Too quickly.
Ava saw that too.
The relatives had moved closer without realizing it. Daniel’s brother stood near the barbecue pit, his wife beside him. Two cousins lingered near the patio steps. An aunt held a wineglass with both hands.
Nobody wanted to be involved.
Everyone wanted to know.
Megan looked at them.
“I won’t explain what is inside that envelope here.”
Daniel exhaled in relief too soon.
She continued, “But I want each of you to remember what happened before he opened it.”
Daniel’s eyes flashed.
“Megan.”
She pointed toward the spilled cooler near the patio.
“A cooler slipped. Ava’s phone fell. I apologized for the accident.”
Ava’s face reddened.
Megan’s voice stayed steady.
“Ava said I insulted her. I didn’t.”
Ava whispered, “I was upset.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Ava, stop.”
She flinched.
Megan’s expression hardened.
“There it is again.”
Daniel looked trapped now.
If he silenced Ava, he proved Megan’s point.
If he let her speak, the lie might collapse.
Ava’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t think it would become this.”
Megan’s heart twisted.
Daniel’s face hardened instead.
“Do not let her manipulate you.”
Ava looked at him.
“She didn’t tell me to lie.”
Silence fell.
The lake wind moved through the trees.
Megan did not smile.
This was not victory.
It was a sixteen-year-old girl realizing too late that her father had turned her tears into a weapon and then blamed someone else for the wound.
Daniel stared at Ava.
Then at Megan.
Then at the unopened envelope.

His control was failing in front of the people he had gathered to witness Megan’s defeat.
