Chapter 5

Ava stared at the folder with growing fear.
“Dad?” she whispered.
Daniel did not look at her.
That answer hurt Ava before any explanation could.
Megan saw it happen.
The daughter who had lied for attention suddenly realized she might have stepped into a fight older than the ruined phone.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Megan, put that away.”
His tone changed.
Not gentle.
Private.
The voice he used when he wanted the room to stop listening.
Megan looked at the relatives.
“No.”
A cousin near the grill cleared his throat.
“Maybe we should give you two some space.”
Megan did not turn.
“Stay.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“This is not their business.”
“You made it their business when you told me to leave your family.”
He flinched at the repeated phrase.
Good.
Megan wanted him to hear it outside his own mouth.
Ava stepped closer to him.
“What’s in the folder?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
Megan almost laughed.
Ava heard it too.
The same parental phrase adults used when the danger had already begun.
Nothing you need to worry about.
But Ava was sixteen, not six.
Her eyes moved from Daniel’s pale face to Megan’s steady one.
The uncertainty in her expression deepened.
Daniel turned back to Megan.
“You’re trying to scare my daughter.”
Megan’s voice sharpened for the first time.
“No, Daniel. I have spent six years trying not to scare her with the truth about how often you use her as a shield.”
Ava’s tears stopped completely.
The relatives went still.
Daniel’s anger flashed.
“Careful.”
Megan tilted her head.
“That word used to work better before I knew what was waiting at home.”
He looked at the folder again.
There it was.
The panic.
Quickly hidden, but present.
Megan removed a sealed white envelope from inside the folder.
No one could see what was written on it.
No one could read its contents.
She held it flat against his chest.
“The answer waiting at home—inside the house you forgot belongs to me.”
Daniel’s hand lowered.
Slowly.
As if the envelope weighed more than his anger.
Ava whispered, “Dad… what did you do?”
May you like
This time Daniel had no immediate lie ready.
