Chapter 25 - DENISE’S LETTERA year later, Eli agreed to receive one letter from Denise.
She wrote:
When I saw you hurt, I knew we should call an ambulance. I let Mark and Charles convince me that waiting would protect the family.
Then:
I gave you water and an ice pack because I wanted to feel like I was helping without doing the one thing that would actually help: opening the door and calling your father.
Eli stopped reading.
Then continued.
I am sorry I made my fear for my own children more important than your safety.
He folded the letter.
I asked nothing.
Later he said:
“I don’t hate her.”
