Chapter 1

Mother-in-Law Uses Her Daughter-in-Law’s Company Money for Twelve First-Class Tickets and Orders Her to Clean the Cat Litter Before the Mansion Deed Changes Everything.
Elena Vale was kneeling beside the cat’s litter box when Patricia Vale waved twelve first-class tickets above her head like victory flags.
The Laguna Beach mansion glowed with coastal daylight. Marble counters shone. Champagne glasses sparkled around the kitchen island. Suitcases waited near the hallway, already tagged for the airport.
Beside Elena, the fluffy ragdoll cat sat calmly, blue eyes fixed on the family as if even he knew cruelty when he saw it.
Patricia pointed down at the litter box.
“You stay home and clean the cat’s litter.”
Daniel laughed beside the marble island.
So did Marissa.
So did the relatives holding champagne glasses paid for by Elena’s company account.
Elena’s jaw tightened, but she did not cry.
Daniel stepped closer and dropped a corporate expense receipt near her hand.
“Stop sulking, Elena. It’s family money.”
Elena looked at the receipt.
The company card details were partly visible.
Her company card.
Her breath went still.
Then she rose slowly, brushing one grain of litter from her sleeve.
“Have a wonderful trip. I’ll handle the house.”
Patricia laughed harder.
Daniel grinned as if she had surrendered.
They did not see Elena’s eyes change.
That afternoon, after they left for Hawaii, Elena walked upstairs to the private study. She moved a framed painting aside, opened the concealed fireproof safe, and removed a thick property folder.
Inside were the deed.
Trust documents.
And Daniel’s signed occupancy agreement.
Six days later, Daniel returned with his family, sunburned and smug, surrounded by expensive luggage.
He pushed his key into the front door.
It stopped halfway.
“Why doesn’t my key work?”
Attorney Nathan Brooks stepped beside Sheriff Grant and held up the sealed property folder.
“Because Hawthorne Crest was never yours.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
May you like
And for the first time, the mansion felt silent enough to hear power changing hands.
