Chapter 9

Daniel tried to switch from anger to intimacy.

That was his last familiar weapon.

He stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“Elena. Let’s discuss this inside.”

Sheriff Grant shifted subtly.

Not blocking Daniel yet.

Only reminding him that movement had limits.

Elena did not step back.

“No.”

Daniel smiled thinly.

“Don’t embarrass us in front of strangers.”

She looked at Attorney Brooks.

Then at the sheriff.

“They are here because you embarrass yourself when no one is watching.”

His eyes hardened.

“You think a deed makes you powerful?”

“No,” Elena said. “I think it makes me accurate.”

Daniel flinched.

He preferred emotional arguments. They gave him places to twist.

Accuracy gave him no room.

Attorney Brooks closed the folder.

“No eviction enforcement is occurring today. No final legal outcome is being announced here. Mr. Vale is simply being informed that his access has been suspended pending review.”

Daniel seized the phrase.

“Pending review means temporary.”

“Possibly,” Brooks said.

That did not comfort him.

It meant other people would decide based on documents he had ignored and conduct he could no longer hide.

Patricia looked toward the door.

“Where are we supposed to go?”

Elena did not answer.

She was not responsible for solving the discomfort created by their arrogance.

Daniel stared at the key in his hand.

The metal looked suddenly ridiculous.

A tiny object he had mistaken for ownership.

He tried the lock once more.

The rejection tone sounded again.
