Chapter 5

Hawaii lasted six days.
Elena knew because Marissa posted every hour.
Champagne in the lounge.
Champagne on the plane.
Champagne on the balcony.
Patricia wearing white linen beside turquoise water with the caption: Finally treated like family.
Daniel appeared in the background of several photos, smiling too widely, sunburned by the third day, holding drinks Elena’s company money had helped reserve before the card freeze caught the remaining charges.
The freeze created problems by day four.
Elena knew that too.
Her finance director called.
“The resort tried to run another block.”
“Declined?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“Do you want us to initiate recovery?”
“Not yet.”
She did not want the final outcome triggered in the middle of a vacation. She wanted the family to return to the exact belief they had left with.
That the house was waiting.
That Elena was humbled.
That the cat litter had been cleaned.
That Daniel’s key would still work.
Meanwhile, Attorney Brooks worked with the trust administrator. Sheriff Grant was contacted for a civil standby at the property entrance because Daniel had a history of forcing access during disputes.
Elena spent the week inside Hawthorne Crest with the ocean below and files open across the study desk.
She did not celebrate.
She did not feel powerful.
Mostly, she felt tired.
Tired of being called dramatic when she named theft.
Tired of hearing family used as a reason to erase boundaries.
Tired of watching Daniel perform ownership while she paid insurance, taxes, staff, maintenance, and every hidden cost of keeping the mansion alive.
On the sixth morning, she put on an ivory blazer with gold buttons, white blouse, matching trousers, and her mother’s pendant.

Then she stood inside the foyer and waited for the vacation van to appear.
