Chapter 8

The luggage became embarrassing.

At first, the suitcases had looked like symbols of triumph.

Twelve travelers returning from paradise to the mansion they believed would receive them.

Now the bags sat in the driveway like evidence of what they had taken.

Bright tags.

Designer cases.

Duty-free shopping bags.

Marissa’s champagne bottle.

Patricia’s resort hat.

Daniel’s jaw pulsed as he looked at them.

“You planned this while we were gone.”

Elena’s expression stayed even.

“I handled the house.”

The same words she had said before they left.

This time, no one laughed.

Attorney Brooks added, “The access review began after documented unauthorized use of corporate funds and after Mr. Vale’s own signed agreement was examined.”

Daniel snapped, “I never signed anything like that.”

Brooks looked at him.

“You did.”

Daniel’s face shifted.

Memory arrived late.

A pre-wedding meeting.

A stack of papers.

An attorney advising him to read slowly.

Daniel waving through the pages because he believed love made documents symbolic and Elena too loyal to enforce them.

Patricia saw his face and understood.

“You signed?”

Daniel did not answer.

Marissa looked toward Elena.

“You’re not letting us in?”

Elena’s voice softened slightly, but not enough to become apology.

“This is not your home.”

Marissa’s eyes filled with panic.

Not guilt.

Inconvenience.

Patricia clutched her chest.

“Elena, don’t be cruel.”

Elena looked at the woman who had pointed at cat litter while waving stolen first-class tickets.

“Cruel?”

Patricia lowered her eyes.

The cat appeared behind the glass door, sitting in the foyer like a silent witness.

Even the animal looked more welcome there than the family shouting outside.
