Chapter 7

Patricia recovered first.

She always did when entitlement needed a voice.

“This is absurd,” she snapped. “My son lives here.”

Attorney Brooks remained calm.

“Mr. Vale occupied the property under terms.”

“Terms?” Patricia repeated, disgusted.

Sheriff Grant stood nearby without touching anyone, professional and still.

Elena appreciated that.

She did not want a scene of force.

She wanted clarity.

Daniel pointed at the house.

“I am her husband.”

Elena looked at him.

“You are a resident under agreement.”

“I paid for renovations.”

“You submitted requests to my trust, and the trust approved some.”

Marissa whispered, “Trust?”

Patricia turned sharply toward Daniel.

“You said the house was marital property.”

Daniel’s eyes flicked away.

That one movement told the family more than Elena could have.

Attorney Brooks opened the folder just enough to show sealed pages without revealing the text.

“Hawthorne Crest is held under a protected family trust established before the marriage. Mr. Vale’s access is subject to conditions, including financial conduct and permitted use.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You can’t lock me out.”

Elena finally spoke.

“You used my company money for twelve first-class tickets.”

Patricia scoffed automatically.

“It was family money.”

“No,” Elena said. “It was corporate money.”

Marissa stepped back from the luggage.

Daniel looked toward Sheriff Grant, as if expecting the uniform to defend him.

The sheriff only said, “We’re here to keep the peace.”

Keep the peace.

Not restore Daniel’s access.

Not remove Elena.

Not validate Patricia.
